Maria is Nagi's maid and surrogate older sister/mother, both appearing and acting in a manner more mature than people typical of her age. Because of this, even people near to her speak of her as if she is older than she really is, a pet peeve for her. A phrase she commonly responds back with is "I'm still a fresh seventeen year old" or 「私ピチピチ十七才ですよ！」

She has the most common sense amongst the ones around her and is the only one who understands the problem between Hayate and Nagi. She appears to be the one in charge of everything in Nagi's manor, since everyone from the head butler to the SP either obeys or fears her. She's good at general housework and likes games of all kinds, though she is deathly afraid of cockroaches, which she refers to as "the dark life-form that exists in the kitchen and other places". She has also proved capable of self-defense techniques in times of need. She is a good fisherwoman as well, being able to catch even the largest fish in Sanzen'in Pond within Nagi's mansion. She is the one that helped Hayate achieve the right to go to Hakuou Academy despite failing the entrance exam.

She has no last name because she was an orphan who was found next to the statue of St. Mary at a church, which is where she got her name. Not knowing anything about herself, her birthday was decided as 24th December, the day she was found. She is the unfortunate one who always has to clean up everyone's messes. She has seen Hayate naked several times, and she sees the effect he has on other girls, many of whom are attracted to him for his kind nature although she has trouble determining if she herself is one of them due to her lack of first-hand experience with interpersonal attractions. Maria is a legend throughout the school for having graduated high school at the age of thirteen in just three years while maintaining the position of Student Council President for all three years.

Maria, given a day off by Nagi, spent the day with Hayate collecting references for Nagi while enjoying her window shopping for clothes. She soon find herself in an awkward atmosphere with Hayate, being thought as a couple and even wore couple clothes with him. But that sensation diminished when they were interrupted by Yukiji and the Student Council Trio. In the end, she took a photograph with him at the ride on the Ferris Wheel.

Maria is given a chance to rest for the day but since the place she went is being run by students of Hakuou Academy, she end up helping most of them.
