Nagi Sanzen'in is the only heir to the Sanzen'in fortune. She is a tomboy and has an otaku hobby with manga and anime, and draws her own manga called Millennium Legend: Magical Destroy. She is good at finance and likes to learn. She has a crush on Hayate, and has misunderstood that Hayate loves her since they first met. Nagi is afraid of dark places and has absolutely no sense of direction, and her only surviving family is her grandfather, Mikado Sanzen'in, whom she doesn't like. She regards Maria as a mother or older sister figure, and warns Hayate not to touch Maria in any indecent way or she will never forgive him. She totally lacks experience for cooking and accordingly is prone to making mistakes when she attempts to cook. One good example is when Hayate is sick and she went to cook for him. She made a bowl of porridge that uses detergent as cooking oil. Somehow, Hayate manages to swallow it all down his throat eventually and is pitied by Maria later. She has a pet tiger, Tama, whom she refers to as a cat.

Nagi spent most of her younger years living outside Japan. Because of her family's wealth, she became the prime target of the Sicilian Mafia and other criminal organizations. Nagi disliked being a target and spent most of her days inside playing video games and watching TV slowly becoming a hikikomori. Hayate, Maria, and Klaus worry about her well-being because she likes to play games until late at night and skip school so they encourage her to leave the house or invite guests for a party. She begins to go to school more often after Hayate transfers to her school. Nagi skipped grades and is currently in the first year of high school and in the same class as Hayate. Apparently, Nagi has once tried to come out of her hikikomori life by trying to join a school club. She find the Kendo Club currently ran by Hinagiku but decides to quit after joining, discovering all the disadvantages of joining the club which included having to wear sweaty, smelly kendo outfit. When caught Hayate acting intimately with Isumi, Nagi angrily sell Hayate to her. She would to regret later and hope that by putting herself in danger, she is to know how much Hayate value her and hopefully tries to get him back. She joined the Butler Battle Tournament and let Hayate fight only to see how Hayate is to win the tournament. She has totally confident that Hayate will win for her sake even before the tournament started.

Nagi then went with Hayate, Sakuya and Wataru in search of how marriage meetings work while she plays director in murder suspense thriller, even though she did not really do well in that though. Trying to prove to Sakuya that she can take care of people especially children younger than her, she went all out trying to do that, ending up not knowing what the innocent children, she has taken care of, has on their minds. Nagi is then hypnotized and made to put Hayate in harm's way. Enraged subconsciously that Hayate abandon her for the cultural festival, she went on a campaign to prove that her doujinshi is the true Japan culture while still being hypnotized. She finally wake up and remembering Hayate as who he really is after eating a cake specially made for her. 

Nagi decides to work on a new manga and request Hayate to get some references on recent trendy date spots that teenagers tend to go these days. She never thought that Maria will go with him and end up having a good time while she is working her butt off trying to draw the manga. Nagi is seen blowing her top literally especially when she found that out from a photograph taken with Hayate and Maria together on the Ferris Wheel.

Nagi mistook Klaus' intention and thought that he wants to retire and allowed him to. But she soon find out that he never wanted to and it is all just talk. But to prove himself that he is still capable of Hayate and the Sanzen'in family still need him, he challenges on the butler skills. But when it seems that Klaus is losing in every department, Klaus decided that it is really time for him to leave. But Nagi is there to stop him in time and hint Klaus that she still need him here. Nagi get to experience what being normal is all about before she embark on the quest to bring back the powerless Hayate. During the course of this, Christmas arrives. Someone by the name of Akane Himegami appear before her very eyes as well. Nagi truly appreciate what her former butler do to help bring back Hayate later but is unimpressed by the fact that he did that for his own selfish reasons as well.

Nagi tries to spend the first sun rise of the the new year with Hayate and demanded that he take her somewhere near the coast at a location she read from the manga using a bicycle. Since that is insane, Hayate tries to persaude her not to do so but Nagi insisted. The bicycle soon find itself turn into a carriage as the cold made Nagi build one on the bicycle. Hayate become the horse that pulled it. Eventually, they reach the coast but Nagi end up sleeping and missing the sun rise. Hayate can only be amused by that.

Nagi attempt to find out whether Hayate has weakness. She did not end up discovering anything. Nagi manage to get her manga animated but it turn out to be a film focusing on characters looking like Hayate and Maria. Nagi wish to celebrate Hayate's promotion to the next grade and even bought him a pocket watch as a present. Hayate is very thankful for her.
