Australian Bush Flower Essences

Flower essences have a very long history spanning many cultures. Even before Christ's time they were used for health and healing. In fact, a number of books claim that flower essences were widely used in the ancient and eosterically known civilisations of Lemuria and Alantis.

The Australian Aborigines contained the beneficial effects of a flower essence by eating the whole flower. The essence, in the form of dew made potent by sun, would thus be consumed with the flower. At the same time, the Aborigines benefited from the nutritive properties of the flower. Often they didnt distinguish between the plant and the flower and simply ate both. Or sometimes they ate the flower just for its taste, especially if it was rich in honey. Moreover, if a flower was inedible, they would sit in a clump for flowers to absorb the healing vibration of the flower.

The use of the flower for the purpose of healing was always seen by Aborigines as a pleasurable rite. They certainly knew of many flowers that could be used for resolving specific emotional imbalances.

A number of other cultures, including the Egyptian, Malay and Africian, used flowers to treat emotional states and imbalances. Though there is European folklore on the healing power of flowers that dates back to at least medieval times, the earliest recorded use of flower essence occurred in the sixteen century when the great healer and mystic Paracelsus collected the dew from the flowers to treat his patients emotional imbalances.

For the ancient herbalist, an understanding of the healing properties of plants was based on the Doctrine of Signatures, whereby some perculiarity of a plant, such as its shape, growth, colour, scent, or taste, indicated its healing properties. For example, eyebright, a blue flower with a yellow centre, suggests the human eye and was used to treat tired eyes. The skullcap flower resembles the shape of the human skull and was used to treat for headaches and insomnia. Nettles are food for circulation, and the bark of the willow ease reumatism, which become worse in damp weather-the tree grows in wet places. Arrach is foul-smelling plant which is used for foul ulcer. Flowers used to treat jaundice, such as dandelion, agrimony and celandine, are yellow in colour.

It would appear that the knowledge of the healing properties of flower essences was largely lost during the last few centuries, especially in the Western world, but to some degree even among the Aborigines.

However, the modern pioneer of flower essences, Dr Edward Bach (1886-1936), brought flower remedies back into use. The timing of Bach's life and work was perfect. His understanding of plants and their great properties came into being just long enough before our time of great awareness to enable people to become familiar with the concept of flower essences and their unique form of healing. This apart from the wonderful effect of these early essences, remains one of if not the greatest legacy of Bach's work.
