Keeping | Fan tails are one of the oldest gold fish varieties known
to man. These are said to have originated in China. Shaped like an egg this fish has large double caudal
or tail fin. Tail is long and flowing. The body is more streamlined than other fancy varieties, but still
is roundish compared to comets and common golds. In the best specimens the tail should not be joined at
any place except the caudal penduncle. The anal fins should be paired as well and not joined. Most popular
Fan tails are solid orange metallic. Fan tails are also avilable in calico colours, with most blues and
blacks being more precious. Calicos are not as hardy as the orange metallic ones. These are more durable
and is the only variety apart from blackmoor which is suitable for outdoor ponds. Life expectancy is
between 5 to 10 years.
