NAGARAJAN'S WEBPAGE FOR BEGINNER'S TROPICAL FISH AQUARIUM

TANK COVER OR HOOD

A cover is very important for the tank. Many fish varieties can leap out of the water if suddenly frightened, and if there is no cover. A cover also prevents dust and other material from falling into the tank. It reduces evaporation of water and surface chilling. Black acrylic plastic covers are very good and they can be easily cleaned. The cover can also house the light which is very essential for the plants and fish. The recess in the cover top holds the fluorescent tube, the starter and the ballast. It also houses the electrical outlet for connecting the filter, thus being compact. The cover should have a rectangular opening at the top with a loose fitting acrylic plate. By lifting this plate you can access the inside of your tank for cleaning, changing water, feeding, catching fish with nets etc.. You can also place decorative artificial flower pots on top of the cover. But never place heavy objects on top of the aquarium as this will add unnecessary pressure on the glass.

In general hoods come with the tank but if you are buying the tank separately and fitting it with the accessories of your choice, then make sure the hood you buy fits your tank. It should sit firmly on the outer lip of the tank glass. Also check what kind of light can be fitted in it and if it is enough wattage for your tank and whether it has provision for keeping the ballast, starter, inserting filter tubes, wiring work, heaters, thermostats etc.. Check differnt types before you buy.
