SCOTLAND 2003

We set off on 12 April with Noreen and Jim for the journey to Tyndrum which is roughly half way between Glasgow and Fort William. As we were travelling in Jim's Galaxy, Noreen and Jim shared the driving so it was quite relaxing for us. We stayed at Glengarry House for eight nights and enjoyed their West Highland Way Experience. It was an excellent way of walking the 95 mile West Highland Way as we had full board and transport to the start and finish of each days walk.

The first day was an easy twelve miles from Milngavie to Drymen. The scenery here was nothing spectacular but pleasant enough. We stopped off at the Glengoyne distillery and the boys sampled the 10 year and the 21 year malts and each came away with heavier rucksacks – it's a good job we weren't backpacking. On the second day we walked 14 miles to Rowardennan and by now had Loch Lomond on our left and the scenery was steadily improving.

The weather was also improving. On the third day, when we walked a fairly strenuous 14 miles to Inverarnan it was beautiful and it stayed like that for the rest of the walk.

We had two 16 mile days – Inverarnon to Glen Auch and Glen Auch to Kingshouse, but the going was not difficult and we were by now in our stride. We're heading for the Highlands as shown in this picture taken near the remains of the ancient Fillan's Priory.

After Bridge of Orchy we climbed Mam Carraigh for beautiful all round views and particularly to Loch Tulla.

We were really in the wilderness when we crossed Rannoch Moor. We had a welcome drinks stop at Ba Bridge.

On the penultimate day we set off from Kingshouse, along Glen Coe and then climbed the Devil's Staircase. We had fantastic views all day. The descent to Kinlochleven was a pleasant gentle descent although the path was rough at times. We had our first sight of Ben Nevis during the descent. This day we just walked nine miles.

On our last day of the Way we walked the fourteen miles from Kinlochleven to Fort William. It was quite strenuous with a steep climb out of Kinlochleven. The descent to fort William was on a lovely path through forest with quite a few ups and downs.

Here's our photo at the end!

The next day we said our farewells to Jim and Diane at Glengarry House and we set off, by car this time, for Fort William exploring Glen Coe, Glen Etive and Glen Nevis before arriving at our home for two nights – Lochan Cottage Guest House.

On our final day – just to round things off – we climbed all 4,406 feet of Ben Nevis. What a contrast in conditions when we got to the summit!! Shortly after these photos were taken we had the first rain of the holiday!
