Rondalla Activities

    1984
    31st December, the group performed 'live' at the National Library Bukit Merah Branch as part of a lunch-time music series performance.

    December 9 1984, NUS Rondalla performed a "Rondalla Music Fiesta" for the Church of the Holy Cross Children's Christmas Treat 1984. Another children's Christmas Party performance was held at the NUS Kent Ridge Guild House on the 16th December.

    On December the 1st, NUS Rondalla performed its debut full-length performance, "Fiesta Rondalla - An Evening of Enchanting Music". The concert, held at the Singapore Conference Hall, included highlights such as the Tinikling, Stand Up for Singapore, Planting Rice Suite, and Mulawin. It was also the debut performance for the 22-strong Marymount Convent School Rondalla, which was formed in 1983.

    The group performed at the NUS forum on 24th November for the NUS Open House. Other bands involved in the event: NUS Chinese Orchestra, NUS Choir, NUS Guitar Ensemble, NUS Harmonica, and the NUS Symphonic Band.

    The NUS Rondalla held a performance and workshop at Marymount Convent in November 1984.

    20th October, the group had the opportunity to perform at the United Nations Day Dinner. Held at Shangrila Hotel, the event was a celebration of the United Nations of Singapore Association 15th anniversary. The repertoire included Stand Up for Singapore, Singapura, Paraluman, Bengawan Solo, Historia de un Amor, Dalagang Philipina, Theme from 'Ice Castles', Suki Yaki, Skater's Waltz, Philippines Medley No. 2, O Ilaw, Dandansoy, Bahay Kubo, Thnikling Ha Bayo, Man in the Net, and Dahil Sa Iyo.

    NUS Rondalla performed at the Pandan Reservior on the 12th September 1984 for the charity walkaton organised by the Cultural Activities and Community Service Club (CACS) of the NUS. The event, which saw the participation of 200 people, was in aid of the Community Chest of Singapore.

    In 6th July 1984, NUS Rondalla made a Lunch-time Radio Recording with the Singapore Boardcasting Corporation (SBC) at LT 27, NUS.

    NUS Rondalla made its pionner trip to the Philippines in April. The members had workshop sessions at the College of Music, University of Philippines from April 10 - 16. The workshop was conducted by the lecturers of the University of the Philippines Musical Arts and Research Management Foundation. It included lectures, tutorials and demostrations, and visits to the school and barrio rondallas. The invariably enriching experience was culminated in a 'Concert at the Park - Rondalla Music at the Park' performance with 5 Filipino rondallas: Rondalla Filipina, Alejandro Albert Elementary School Rondalla, Plaridel Elementary School Rondalla, Jose and Santos High School Rondalla, and the Ramon Magasaysay High School of Manila Rondalla. Held at the Open-Air Theatre, Rizal Park, Manila, the concert series was telecast live over the government television station. The project was by the First Lady, Madame Imelda Romualdez Marcos, under the auspices of the National Parks Development Committee, the National Media Production Center, the Maharlika Broadcasting System-Progress Television 4, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
