NUS's very own Rondalla ensemble The students at the National University of Singapore (NUS) are not all bookworms and swotters. Their medium may be imported but the NUS Rondalla ensemble are trying to make it their own. The Rondalla ensemble, comprising Filipino, Spanish, and classical instruments, is part of tomorrow's Music and Movement Concert. Originally, the ensemble was made up of the 14th-stringed bandurria, octavina, laud, baho de unias, guitar, and the double bass. The NUS group, however, has included the mandola and mandolin to meet the needs of their repertoire which has expanded beyond the traditionally folk items. Formed in 1981, the 21-member ensemble feels that it's doing something new and exciting by broadening the range of the instruments. The members have become so proficient that they can arrange their own scores. Their performance will include all-original versions of popular Boradway and local favorites, arranged by 2 members, Low Mei Ling, and Hsh Tsai Ping. Hearung a rich and melodious rendition of Samsui Women by these students left me in no doubt of their claims. ... The Folk dance group works are choreographed by the students, and in one item, will blend music and dance with 'live' accompaniment by the Rondalla ensemble.
