Rondalla Activities

    1995
6 Dec 1995, 10 members of the NUS Rondalla performed at the 10th International Conference on Solid State Ionics Dinner held at Shangri-La Hotel.

17 October, NUS Rondalla performed at the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre (SUNTEC) Auditorium for the Meeting Net Asia 1995 (Forum for the Future). The two day forum was organised by the Asian Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus (AACVB), which comprises 10 Asian countries. The forum was essentially a conference for the meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (Mice) industry.

23 August 1995, the group performed a lunchtime concert at the NUS Theatrette LT 13. The event was organised by Campus Concerts and sponsored by ESSO Singapore.

5 to 18 June 1995, members Ms Hazel Tan, Mr Chong Chun Kwok, Mr Chee Wah Yong, and Mr Gary Tan took part in the 10th National Music Competition with pieces 'Ballet from Rosamunde', 'Schubert', 'Suite Espanola, IV Zapateado', and 'Enrique De Ulierte'.

Members Ms Hazel Tan, Mr Chong Chun Kwok, Mr Chee Wah Yong, and Mr Gary Tan performed at the Naming Ceremony of the Shaw Foundation Building on the 8th April 1995. The event was officiated by Chancellor of NUS and President of Singapore, Mr Ong Teng Cheong. The building, originally named AS7 (affectionately known as the 'gateway' to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), was the first building on the NUS campus to be named after a donor. The building was in honor of the Foundation and in memory of the late Tan Sri Dr Runme Shaw. Dr Shaw was a movie magnate and philanthropist who believe in education. He once said, "Education is more important than money. That's why I want all my children to become graduates."

The annual 'Fiesta Rondalla' concert was performed on 4 Feb 1995 at the PUB Auditorium. The NUS Rondalla ensemble played pieces such as the 'Andaluz' (Filipino Folk), 'Water Music No. 3' (Allegro); 'Carnavalito' (Peruvian Folk); 'El Condor Vuelve' (Bolivian Folk); 'A Time for Us'; and 'Picking Tea & Catching Butterflies'. The concert featured solo guitar pieces by guest guitarist, Mr Chow Kian Kiong; tunes by small rondalla ensembles; and a lovely recital of 'Songs of Ireland' by the NUS Rondalla and Guest Singer, Ms Fua Lee Na. Visual highlights of the night included the tipangkluang, a unique creation of the Philippines; the Erhu played by Ms Hazel Tan; and the flute by guest flautist, Mr Chu Wee Yong.
