Rondalla Activities1998 22 Dec, the group provided music for the Christmas Candlelight Service of the Salvation Army Balestier Corps. 12 October, 6 of the NUS Rondalla members had the opportunity to play at the Istana Banquet Hall for the State Dinner held in honour of President Estrada's Visit. 18 September, 4 members of the NUS Rondalla ensemble performed 'Only You' in a ESSO Campus Concert 'Fusion!'. The 'Fusion!' performance was a showcase of the collaboration of various musical ensemble groups of the Centre for the Arts. This included special music works created by a duet of an erhu player with reowned classical guitarist Mr Alex Abisheganaden; the NUS Symphonic Band with the NUS Choir; a Guzheng solo; and the NUS Instrumental Ensemble with a combination of veena, sitar, and tabla. 22 July, the group performed 'Euphony' lunchtime concert at the Ng Eng Teng Gallery. A part of the ESSO Campus Concerts, the performance aimed towards enhancing the visitor's viewing pleasure of the beautiful sculptures in the gallery. 15 August, NUS Rondalla performed for the Mabuhay Festival at the Raffles Marina. "On behalf of the Embassay of the Republic of the Philippines and on my own, please accept a token of our appreciation for your invaluable contribution in lending a truly native 'Filipino' atmosphere to the two very important occasions sponsored by the Embassay, i.e. the Centennial of Declaration of Philippine independence reception last 12 June and recently during the Philippine Diplomatic Socials at the Raffles Marina. Encomienda, Ambassador" 8 August, the group performed at the Moral Home for the Destitute as a way of celebrating the National Day of Singapore. 16 and 20 June, the group performed at Change Alley and Chimjes respectively. The performances were a part of the Singapore Festival of Arts 'Fringe 98'. 12 June, NUS Rondalla was proud to play at the 1898 - 1998 Philippine Centennial held at Mandarin Ballroom. The reperoire included the 'Majulah Singapura', 'Pambansang Awit Ng Philipinas', 'O Ilaw', 'Bengawan Solo', and 'Guantanamera'. 13 May 1998, members Ms Emily Low, Lim Jew Jing, Mr Jou Wei Huang, and Mr Chong Chun Kwok performed for the 8th Manufacturing Conference Dinner at the Kent Ridge Guild House. The annual 'Fiesta Rondalla' concert was held on 28 Feb 1998 at the Alliance Francaise Auditorium. The concert was part of the first ever National University of Singapore (NUS) Festival of Arts 1998. The patron was His Excellency, Mr Ong Teng Cheong, President of Singapore, and Chancellor of the NUS. His Excellency, Mr Alberto A Encomienda, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Embassy of the Philippines and Mrs Encomienda were the Guest of Honours of the night. The NUS Rondalla ensemble concert repertoire included 'Kayamanan Ng Lahi', 'Rimenbranza Napoletana', 'Voici Le Mois De Mai', 'Two Guitars', 'From a Japanese Screen', and 'Somewhere in Time'. The highlight of the event was 'Tinikling'. The event was kindly sponsored by the Lee Foundation, and made possible by a Youth Development Fund Grant from the National Youth Council.
