A Betta's Finnage




The Betta's fins are originally short. This is to allow it to swim fast and escape from predators in it's natural habitat. Due to mututation, the long finned variety has also emerged into the Betta Splendens tail variety. The long finned variety is kept mostly for show. Displaying the beautiful finnage of each indidvidual betta, as well as it's colours. The first type of long fins developed is the Veil Tail(VT). Over the years, from the veil tail, many other tails have come about. Some of theses tail type are the Crown Tail(CT), the Half Moon(HM) and the Delta and Super Deltas tails/ Below is the short description of the various tail typs.

Tail Type Veil Tail Tail Type Short Tail Tail Type Double Tail
Description The most commonly seen of the Bettas. It's claudal fin is hanging downwards like a veil, hence the name Veiltail. It is the cheapest of all the type of bettas, it is easily available at most LFS. Description The short tailes Betta, commonly known as the Plakat. This is the orignal strain of the Betta and is still as aggressive and fierce as ever. It still used in some places for fighting. Description The Double Tail betta's claudal fin is split into two lobes. The best of is judged to have evenly sizes tail lobes and the split must go all the way to the body. Some whose split do not reach the body gives the tail a heart shape look.

Tail Type Delta Tail Tail Type Super Delta Tail Tail Type Halfmoon Tail
Description The Delta Tail betta has a tail shape similar to the letter 'D'. It is fast becoming more popular then the Veil Tail. Description The Super Delta has a larger D compared to the Delta Tail. It is from this tail type that a Half Moon tail is made possible. Description The Half Moon betta has a tail that resembles a half moon. The line of the two ends should be of a 180 degrees. Anything lesser would be a Super Delta. This is the most valuable type as it is very rear. Hence the extremely high cost.

Tail Type Round / Fan Tail Tail Type Comb Tail Tail Type Crown Tail
Description The Round/Fan tail has a tail similar to that of the Delta. Except the tail edges are rounder where the Delta tail has sharper edges Description This is not an official tail type and neither is it very uncommon. The longer rays give it a comb look, hence the name comb tail Description It is a more pronounced and longer rays then tha of the Comb Tail. Til today, it is possible to get Double Ray, Crossed Ray and 4 Ray Crowntail. The rarest of the Crown Tail is the King Crown tail whose rays cross each other. It is far rarer then a Half Moon Betta as 2 King Crown parents may not produce a single King Crown fry.
