what we DO NOT use and why....

Approximately 90 percent of food allergens come from milk, soy, whey, corn, shellfish, tree nuts (pecans, walnuts, cashews, etc.), peanuts and preservatives. At Pet Health Barkery, we are most concerned about what your pets consume, so we try as far as possible not to use these items in our recipes. If your pet suffers from any allergy to other things not on this list, please consult us to see if we can bake to meet your request.

Here are a list of ingredients we avoid :

Artificial Colors
Artificial Flavours
Chemical Preservatives
Yeast / Brewer’s Yeast : Yeast is cheap source of B vitamins amino acids and some nutrients. It can contribute to poor skin & coat conditions by burdening the liver and interfering with proper digestion and can also cause allergies in dogs and cause bloat as it is a gas producing product.
Corn, Soy, Sesame, Sunflower and Safflower oils: we avoid using all commercial brands of polyunsaturated vegetable oils as they are chemically unstable resulting in toxic compounds that can damage DNA and cell membranes, promoting cancer, inflammation, and degenerative changes in tissue.
Soy : Dogs with allergy to soy may find their dogs with itchy, flaky skin and a dull coat and may cause bloat in dogs as it is also a gas producing product. Check out this article: Bloat in dogs.

Dairy Products e.g. butter, cream, milk : these are high in fat and cause dogs to be unhealthily overweight. Dogs who are lactose intolerant can also have severe diarrhea.

Pork

Sugar : Primary trigger of excessive shedding, weight problems, diabetic conditions and behavioural problems in dogs.  Excessive amounts can also lead to diabetes, obesity and dental problems.

Salt : Can cause kidney problems and causes dogs to shed excessively and may lead to electrolyte imbalance

Nuts : Some dogs have allergies to nuts. Also, Many nuts are generally bad for dogs as their high phosphorus content is said to possibly lead to bladder stones, especially walnuts. They are poisonous to dogs and at all accounts should be avoided.

Peanut Butter / Peanuts : These are high in fat and can cause allergies in dogs

Onions : These can cause anaemia in dogs

Bacon or bacon bits : These are high in salt and fat.

Tuna : Tuna contains mercury which is harmful to dogs.

Mushrooms : Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death. Since we don’t know which mushrooms are safe for pets to eat, we rather not include this in our recipes.

Raisins and grapes : are toxic to dogs. Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. Since we do not know how much is too much, we choose not to use them in our recipes.

Tomatoes : are toxic to dogs. Contain atropine, which can cause dilated pupils, tremors, and heart arrhythmias.
