International Civil Aviation Organisation

Commemorating its 50th anniversary

This stamp issue commemorates the 50th anniversary of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) which was established in December 1944 to ensure the development of safe, regular, efficient and economical air transport. The four stamps, in denominations of 20¢, 35¢, 75¢ and $2, incorporate designs that reflect the progressive, high-tech and futuristic nature of the aviation industry.

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) was established in December 1944 to meet the needs of the people of the world for safe, regular, efficient and economical air transport. Of all human activities, civil aviation is probably the most dependent on international cooperation. The ICAO has therefore played an important role in ensuring that international air transport services are established on the basis of equality of opportunity and operated soundly and economically. Singapore has benefited much from its membership in the ICAO.

This issue commemorates the 50th anniversary of ICAO and highlights its contribution to international civil aviation.

The four stamps reflect the progressive, high-tech and futuristic nature of the aviation industry.

The 20¢ stamp shows a globe with the 50th anniversary logo for ICAO.

The 35¢ stamp features an aircraft of the future, the Boeing 747-X, a double-decker plane set against the familiar Changi Airport control tower.

The 75¢ stamp depicts the hypersonic speed aircraft, another aircraft of the future.

The $2 stamp captures the nature of the aviation industry, which is fast-paced, sophisticated, technology driven. The stamp features the sophisticated future air navigation system, known today as the ICAO communications, navigation and surveillance and air traffic management systems concept. The system will improve air-traffic management in a cost-effective manner.
