OVERVIEW ON SINGAPORE:
Singapore is a beautiful island situated in the South
East Asian Region with a population of over 4 million. There are four kinds of
races residing... Majority of them
are Chinese speaking. They are followed by Malay speaking, Tamil speaking and
the rest population are cosmopolitan comprising of all other races.
Chinese, Malay, Tamil and English are the official languages.
Democratic form of Government rules the country right from its
independence since 1965.
Singapore is a Shopping paradise. All branded
items of all ranges are available. Very little commodities are manufactured
here. So, majority of the goods are imported. 3%sales tax is levied on the goods
sold. Tourist can redeem the sales tax if their purchase exceeds S$300.
Specialist shopping center, Orchard Plaza, Ngee Ann City, Robinsons, Center
Point, Takashimaya, Plaza Singapura and OG are the bigger and more famous malls
in the hot of the city ‘Orchard Road.’
Other notable shopping malls are Sim Lim Square, Wisma Atria, Suntec
City, Tangs, Wheel lock Place, Tanglin Mall, Novena Square, UE square, Seiyu and
North Point.
‘Little India’ located in Serangoon Road comprises shops and restaurants all
of Indian style. The whole stretch is full of Indian jewels shop, grocery marts,
CD shops, saree shops and much more inclined towards India and Indian culture.
Number of Indian temples both South and North are there for worshippers.
Thaipusam that falls during the month of January is the highlight of the Indian
festivals, which is celebrated for three days at the Murugan temple. South
Indian restaurants viz….komalas, Sakunthalla, Anandhabhavan, Bannana leaf
Apollo, and many more restaurants serves the people a real taste of Indian food.
The giant super store “Muhamad Mustafa” sells all consumer goods
under one roof and is undoubtedly popular among tourists. Likewise
Chinese have their ‘Chinatown’ and the Malays ‘Geylang Serai’ where you
can find all things Chinese and Malay respectively.
Sight seeing places are also of variety in Singapore. The Singapore science
center is considered as one of the top science centers in the world. At various
theme halls, the center displays around 650 interactive exhibits.
The omni theatre located adjacent to the center is a
dome shaped and 23m wide screen that
welcomes you to a thrilling and spell binding cinematic experience. The center
is open from 10 AM to 6 PM but closed on Mondays. Admission cost ranges from
$1.50 to $5.
The Botanic Garden is located on 52 hectares. It is opened from 5 AM to
midnight. There are at least thousand plant species available here. National
Orchid Garden displays over 60,000 orchid plant and colourful foliage. It has
the combination of primary rainforest and manicured gardens.
Sentosa Island is the most attractive sight seeing spot. Asian Village, under
water world, Merlion, Musical fountain, Fort silosa, Butterfly garden are some
of the important segments of Sentosa island.
Cable car ride and ferry ride are the tow ways people could reach sentosa
island.
The Singapore Zoological Center is the must see for visitors. Touted as one of
the most beautiful zoos in the world it is a home to over 200 animal species.
Located in the heart of the forest seletar area and surrounded by the tranqauil
waters of the selatar reservoir the zoo exists in harmaony amid the lush
greenery. The carefully planned enclousers take you closer to these animals. No
bars or cages mar the natural setting and this is the beauty here. Night safari
from 6-00 PM to 9-00 PM depicts the night life of animals. Artificially created
mountains and trees here creates a
feeling of jungle life.
Chinese food such
as meegoreng, satay and chicken rice are served in the cuisines in and around
boat quay and Clarke quay. People interested in night life are entertained in
the pubs, discos and karaoke widely
scattered all over the city.
Public transports Singapore Bus Service and SMRT(underground metro train)
provides excellent service from 5-00 AM till night 12-00 PM.
Taxis are also comparatively much cheaper and the drivers are genuine and
there is no history of cheating tourists. The climate here is generally warm and
lighter clothes are always suitable. Carrying a rain coat is necessary too as
rain could be expected any time.
Travel in Singapore is always unique and memorable especially due to its
wonderful landscape. Pleasant feeling will roam around us as soon as we land in
the clean and green city.
