the born free school
Once upon a time, far, far away from anywhere else in the world, there was a village. And at the very edge of this village a school was built. It was the most wonderful school in the world. And the children who went there were very, very happy.

It sounds like a fairy tale, but seeing the Born Free School was like seeing a dream. Here was a masterpiece of architectural ingenuity, something that even Gaudi would be proud of. A gigantic painted map for the classroom floor. Translucent fibreglass windows that opened into the courtyard below. Mosaics of animals and plants throughout. Murals of children living in peace. Ethnic motifs and a dozen different languages adorning the walls. A slide to go downwards instead of a staircase. This was the house that John Devaraj (and Janothsava) built.

But most of all, it was the children who made this place what it was. You could see it in their faces. These kids had something in them that all the other kids we'd seen so far just didn't have. A place where they felt secure. Where they could learn about life. Where they could just be kids.
