April 10, 2005 Wayah Gap

Today is Sunday which means no postal service.  The lady 'Rita Callahan' at Franklin Motel agreed to mail my bounce box Monday morning to Nantahala Outdoor Center; otherwise I would have had to slack pack again today.  I don't want to take a zero day until Fontana Dam.  I will definitely miss Jay's expertise along the tail.  He can identify most wild flowers and birds encountered along the way.  I'm waiting on the shuttle to pick me up at 9:00a.m. for a 10 mile ride to Winding Stairs Gap.
Yesterday evening was Simon's first experience riding a bus where all he had to was walk up the steps to get in; then, I could read his mind, "Where's my soft seat to lie on?  Don't these people know my bones are tire too?  Oh, well, we'll be back in Franklin before long and I can scratch my back on the carpeted floor and sleep till noon
Simon enjoys hiking the trail especially when Chester, a red Irish Setter from VT is close by.  Most all hikers he meets now know him and pat him on the head san say, "Hello Simon".
The weather is expected to be beautiful the next few days.  I hope so!  Caring a set damp pack over Wayah Bald at 5,342' wouldn't be an easy task.  I've certainly met some very interesting people from several states including 2 from Alaska and a couple from England.
Shuttle didn't stop for me at Franklin Motel.  I had to find another ride.  Rita called a friend "Kay Coriella" for a ride to Wayah Gap.  She turned to be next years president of the Nantahala AT Club.  I enjoyed meeting her.  She gave me a $10 dollar donation for NIN.  Kay told me I should have gone to Franklin Library, where they probably would have interviewed me for the local paper. - Sorry Ann Marie, I missed the boat!
Wayah Bald 5,324" was a bear to climb straight up!  There wasn't any switch backs until the top 3 or 4 hundred feet.  The stone tower built by CCC people was the high light of the day, with 360degree views. Simon climbed the open stairs all the way to the top with me.  I wasn't sure if I could get him down.  No problem.  He came down like a pro!  I didn't stay on the to very long because the air was cold.

Stayed at Cold Springs Shelter with Hot and Sweaty, Ski Bum and Doc Albert.
