August 11, 2005
Leaving from the ball field, Graymoor Spiritual Life Center, slack packing again today to RHP Shelter about 20 miles out.
Going a long steep hill, what look like a motorcycle path or something.  Surrounding area look like the other days hardwood forest with a lot of boulders and rocks strung out all over the place.  I can hear the Graymoor church bells ringing off in the distance.  I guess it's a clock tower.  I was rather disappointed that I didn't get to eat my dinner with the Franciscans or see their grounds and the chapel.  I did eat a soggy tuna fish sandwich they had left at the shelter house.  I ate the insides of it, threw the rest of away and the caretaker there gave Simon a cup full of beef and onions to mix with his food.  It was a nice place to stay.  I had a cold shower last night.  After the shock it felt pretty good then.
I on top of the boulders with a great view of the mountains.  It hazy so you can't see to far in the distance.  Here again I had to hunt for the blazes.  There was no turn marks, but I finally found a blaze that was on a rock which wasn't close enough together to keep you from going the wrong way.  Someone has built a stone wall on top of this cliff.  Still pretty well in tack.
I've had a lot of short hills, with ups and downs.  Crossing now the swamp area.  There is some running water in it.  The weeds are way to high in here, I'll probably be soaked just from the weeds.  Can't tell where you're going.
I've come into Old Albany Post Rd.  A dirt gravel road crossing Chatman road.
I just passed over the Canopus Hill Road and there is high stone wall feces through here, also a couple of rock foundations.  There is stone rocks fences on both sides where I am now.  Maybe a horse and buggy trail.  This is really a overgrown area along the trail.  The black berries are shriveling up and just about falling to the ground.
Just hiked over South Highland Road.  Stopped at Dennytown Road for about a half hour.  Got some water, had some lunch and talked to Atrain from New Zealand for a while.
It's really warn today.  Simon is extremely hot.  I have to go a little slower sometimes to let him cool off.  Just saw a gray squirrel run across the road.  I'm now at Sunk Mine Road.  The road is a gray like limestone, also looks like a stone foundation where the once was a house.
I now going into a hemlock forest with a bunch of boulders on the side.  Crossing another stream with a bunch of water.  Water falls even, I haven't seen that much water in NJ or NY.  Getting read to climb up some huge boulders here.  Probably short lived.  All rock.
The section I'm going through now is very flat, lot of grass, and of course rocks.  Ferns in big patches.  I just came through a big patch of euthimus which is difficult to go through because it scratches you so badly.  To my right I can see a very large swamp area.  This must be a drainage area with water running in streams.  It's not to much, but it is water.
This is interesting!  A rock wall, a real high one goes across kind of a ravine area.  One side of the mountain to the other side.  It might have been a horse trail.  This path is really level and goes right around to about the midsection of this rocky mountain with large boulder on the side of it.  This is one of the prettiest areas that I've been in today.
Just crossed over 301 Canopus Lake Road.  From the trail I can see the lake occasionally is part of Fahnestock State Park.  The trail is going to take straight up to the top of huge boulder.  This is one big rock mountain.  I finally got to see a good view from the lake from the top of the mountain.  I can see a beach with a roped off swimming area.  The lake is really long and the mountains come down of both sides.  It is shaped like an L.
The trail here is really closed in with laurel and blueberry bushes, making it difficult to hike. Hiking right a stone wall fence again on both sides of me.  One takes off and goes up side the hill and the other stays beside of me.
I met my first south bound through hiker today.  His name is Peanut Butter.  He said he started June 10.  Wow!  This is the best view I've had all day long.  From the top of the mountain I standing on a large solid boulder.  I can quite a few mountain tops.  All woods and a big fat power line goes through.  Someone has painted a US flag on top of this rock.  In memory of September 11.  They did a nice job in it.
The trail is lined with scrub oaks.  These are also shriving up from lack of water.  The smells like fall when you go through a lot of leaves on the ground.  Just now passing Long Hill Road.  I hiking under those power lines that I could see from the top of the mountain.  A lot of Bee Bomb, Queen Anne's Lace, Black Eyed Susan's, Golden Rod, Shasta Daisy's and a lot of briars.  I'm glad to be back in the woods, the sun is really hot, even at 5:20pm
I just met Peanut Butter's friend Connote.  Back into a hemlock forest area with fairly mature trees.  I just met the third south bounder, he didn't stop to talk, he was in a hurry.
I'm going by an enormous mountain of rock ledges.  Nothing on it but a few pines here and there where they can get enough dirt.
I'm at the RPH Shelter.  1,413.3 miles from Springer Mountain.
