August 15, 2005
I stayed at Cooper Creek B & B last night and the owner brought me down to the Post Office this morning and to the bank.  He said he would let me shuttle today, so he shuttled me up to Cornwall Bridge which is north and I hiking back south to Kent where I'm going to stay at the B & B tonight.
Hiking down what they call the river road, not in the woods which is a really good change for me today.  I was on asphalt for about a mile and half with a lot of beautiful houses, rock gardens beautiful landscaping.  Pretty country, I really like Conn.  Turned on to a dirt road which is beside the Housatonic River.  A lot of open fields with beautiful flowers.  I can the river most of the time.
Met a couple of local people on the trail today.  I'm doing about 11 to 12 miles today.  I didn't start until 9:45am.  I should be able to hike this fairly quickly.  It's level, a real smooth trail and Simon is thoroughly enjoying it.  It is a cooler day and we both enjoying it because it's a cooler day.
Last night we had real hard thunder storms, so there is a few mud puddles in this area and I passed one creek that had a little water in it.  I didn't put a pack on Simon today because he's got the whole river to drink out of today.  Simon is really slack packing today.  I did bring myself 2 liters of water to make sure I had enough to go the 12 miles.
Where I'm hiking now the trail is clear with little stones sticking out.  The water is really clear, I can look down and see the bottom of it.  This is just a straight shot, I'm going through a hemlock coverage, the trees butt right up to the river.  The ground is all leaf covered.  Smells good too.  A corn field on the right side of me.  The first corn field I've seen since southern PA.
This certainly a nice change from all the stones I've been tripping over the last several hundred miles.  Sure is pretty through here.  I wish you could be hiking with me.  The section I'm hiking through today is state owned land.  It is the actual Indian Reservation that is in this area.   The woods is all in its natural state.  In some places there is a lot of under growth and in some place it is very clear.
Getting into a real rocky area in the woods, it's just rock after rock piled on top of each other.  I see some fresh beaver cuttings and I saw a beaver dam in the river.  I went into Stuart Hollow Shelter to sign the guest book and see who had been there before me.
I just saw a blue heron fly off the river, out catching himself some supper.  Hiking along the river road, a graveled road along the river.  I should be coming into the asphalt area before long and into Kent.  I've seen several north bound friends, some I haven't seen in a couple of weeks or more.
Going into Kent and get a sandwich and get Simon and I some ice cream, a coke, go to the outfitters and the grocery store to get a few things that wasn't in my drop box this morning and head back to the B & B.  It's been a really good hiking day.  All level and toughly enjoyed it.  Talk to you tomorrow.
