August 21, 2005
I left Shaker Camp site at 8:40am.  Hopefully I can find some place to get in out of the rain and dry out.  It didn't start raining until early this morning and then it poured off and on.  I got everything packed up that was inside of my tarp.  Then it started pouring hard when I started to take the tarp down.  I took the backpack and Simons pack to the privy and stood in there for a little bit until hard down pour ceased.  Took my tarp off and shook out the best I could and wadded it up and put it into the bag.
I'm on my way now, I'm extremely wet.  Getting soaked just going through the weeds and over grown meadows.  I'm now in Tyringham Cobble Conservation.
NOTE: This was formed by a geological event that separated this hill from the mountain behind it, the cobble rises 400 feet above the village below.
At first I came up a steep hill, through hemlocks, and now the woods is changing to mostly to hardwoods.  There is a lot of undergrowth, a very junky woods.
I really going through some wet soggy fields this morning.  Probably had been pastures before.  I just passed the cobble stone trail which I didn't go up.  I stayed on the AT trail.  I just got stung right smack in the face.  I hope I didn't miss my turn back there.  I'm ok I see a blaze.  I just picked a couple hand full of blackberries.  There are some big white pines in this area and some bushes that look like ewes that people plant in their yards.
Went over Jerusalem Road through a cow pasture and back into a woods.   It's a hemlock woods, a lot of swampy land through here, so I had to hike on several board walks.  This makes the second creek I've passed and bridge that I've gone over in just the last few minutes.  These bridges a slick.  I've seen several of the stone wall fences in this area too.
I have been hiking on a small corridor of woods between two fields that were not being used.  Now in a open pasture field. I'm hiking on a board walk.  Most of this land must be swampy and spongy.  The one I'm on now is quite lengthy.  One of the bridges build like a triangle is coming up to go over.  It crosses the little creek there.
I can hear the traffic on Barrington Mass. road.  I actually cross this road twice.  Crossed the road into a dark hemlock forest.  At least the trail is easy to hike with soft pine needles.
Climbed straight up the hill.  It took me a little while to get up there, but it leveled off at the top.  Still in hemlock hardwood forest.  I talk to a south bounder that was hiking with his dog.  He had been with his dog ever since Able Bridge which is just outside Baxter Park.  His dog got along OK, but her paws got soft from all the rain and she got limpy, but other than that she didn't have any trouble.  There were some places where she had to be lifted over some boulders.  I think I'm going to pull Simon out when my husband comes.
I made it almost up to the top of the second hill.  Going straight up, really steep and the humidity is terrible.  The sun was out for a while, I was hoping it would stay out so things would dry out a little bit.  It's just kind of over cast right now.  Hopefully we won't get any more rain.  It flattened out.  A lot of grass in this area.  I think years ago it was somebody's home place.  I've also crossed over some fences.  A good wild lifer area, a lot fern coverage.  A lot of hard woods going down.  A trail angel left some cokes in a container on the side of the road.  It was nice, I need something about that time.
So far it hasn't been to bad hiking.  Came across some large boulders, some and steep hills.  Simon and I stopped and ate some lunch a little bit ago.  I'm kind of dragging my feet a little bit.
Goose Pond trail reminds me of lot of the Hocking Hills area around Rose Lake where we had big pines and large rocks with mosses on them.  Also Burr Oak.  I now at Good Pond Cabin.  I knew that they would take Simon and it is still 1 and a sixth mile out to US20.  There was a motel there, bit I didn't know if they would take Simon or not.  So I decided to go ahead and come into Goose Pond Cabin.  It's 2:35pm, early, but I need to dry out.  I've been rained on tree times since this morning.  My pack is wet and everything is really damp.  I can get a shower here and clean up a little bit.  Talk to you tomorrow.
