Leaving Key
Wood Shelter at 7:00am.
1,551.7 miles from Springer
Mt. Should be in town in about an hour. The trail
should be smooth, mostly down hill and it's through open hardwoods.
It's cool this morning. It was down right cold last night.
Good thing I had a 40 degree sleeping bag. I didn't have any
long johns or anything to put on to take the temperature down lower.
It was in the high 40's. The sun is starting to peek out now.
So, it's going to warm up and be a really nice day. I thins
the whole eastern side of the US is having cool weather now. |
Getting ready to cross Grange-Haul Road.
There is two creeks that converge at the top of the hill that I just
came over. It comes running down through this valley and is
very damp in this area. When it rains really hard this whole
section floods. |
I didn't think I was going to have to climb
any more hills, well I certainly was wrong. This section is
just a roller coaster as the rest of it was. That was the
longest, steepest climb that I've probably had in 2 or 3 days.
They brought us down into the creek ravine and brought us straight
up other side of the mountain. I'm not quite at the top,
almost. Also had some large rock steps that I had to go up,
plus a lot of just boulders that I had to climb. Then there
was large outcroppings on the side of the hill. |
This is a real grassy area up here on top.
Going down a lot of boulders and steps now. A lot of boulders
just to my left all covered with moss, beautiful ferns. A
little clover looking flower that I've seen for several days.
It usually turns color in the fall. I've seen it before, but I
don't know what the name of it is. I'm really glad I didn't
come down through here last night and have to motivate these rocks
in the dark. That's no fun. They're very tricky
and dangerous during the day, let alone at night. So much for
a straight trail, huh! |
Going into the CSX RR tracks. I
should be going into town on Depot Street. |
Going to do slack packing from Dalton until
John gets here. |
