July 03, 2005
Left the Scottish Inn at 8:10am.  Walked down through to town to the bridge at Rt. 522.  I could hear the Church Bell chiming and that made me a little homesick to go play bells at church.  On Rt. 522 a couple with a convertible sport car picked me up and dropped me off at the trail head.  It is now 9:35am.  In about 3 days I should be in Harpers Ferry.
Coming through a open field now.  A lot of Hazel in this area.  Net weed, raspberries, wild onions have seed pods, and a purple vine on the fence.  This an open area around the zoological area with a high fence next to me, its look like a prison wall with bob wire on the top.  A lot of chick weed blooming in the field.  A lot of wild roses and grape fine growing on this fence.  A lot of honeysuckle vines growing and the odor is just wonderful.  Bottle some of that up and take it home with me.
I've been going a steady up-grade for a mile and a half and got into a rocky section on top of the ridge line and now I'm starting down.  The woods is beginning so you can see clear out into the woods.  There's a lot of weeds and stuff along the trail.  Both sides of 522 haven't been very pretty.  No views and I haven't met any people.  The woods is really quiet this morning.
There are a lot of tall trees in this area, make a lumber man happy.  A lot of oaks and poplars.  The terrain is low and flat.  It appears that I'm kind of in a wet area.  There lot of gnats and misquotes this morning.
I'm standing right beside a popular tree  along side the trail that is every bit four feet in diameter and just as straight as I can see.  I passes some wondering Jew.  Its a plant with blue flowers and Mom used to grow it in damp areas.
Came to the Jim and Molly Denton Shelter, wow what a shelter.  Big deck on the front of it, a two story platform shelter.  Has a privy and a water that's piped in from the spring.  You can get out of a faucet, and went up to a big vat that is the shower.  It also has a big cooking pavilion with picnic table underneath.  They didn't want any one cooking under the shelter.
At highway 638.  I had to walk down the road a ways into this newly mowed hayfield.  I'm glad I'm out of that open field, it was blazing hot and the trail was straight up the hill.
On a large sign nailed into tree reads; The next  27 miles of the AT between Manassas and Snickers Gaps follow what was once from 1863 to 1865 the western boundaries of Mosby's Confederacy.  The base of operation for confederate parties since Ranger Col. John Singleton Mosby.
Having to hike on 725 for a good ways before going back into the woods again.  A wonderful picnic table right as I get into the woods.  Made especially for me to eat my lunch on.  Right past the Picnic table is a log bridge, stone steps and a log with chains.  The picnic table is out  -- it has mulberries all over it and the birds have made a feast out of it.
I standing before a triple oak tree, 3 trunks coming out of one stump.  Each of the trees must be a good 25 - 30 feet high. and its growing on top a a big rock pile.
Went down to Manassas Gap Shelter to get water, but didn't stay very long because that is the shelter that has copper heads living in it.  I did see one crawl along the rafter line, but that was all.  I wasn't going to stick around to see if there was anymore.
I just saw my first perk lily in bloom.  I looked for those all through the Smokies, but didn't see any.
