Getting to leave Right Spot Motel and being shuttled up to Caledonia State Park. Tom and I left Caledonia State Park at 9:20am. We had one major to climb out of the Caledonia State Park, it was very rocky, but it was spread out enough that it was easy hiking. We got to the top it was a very smooth trail and able to hike without poles.
Going through rhododendron area. They are on both side of the trail still blooming. The one growing in this area are like the ones at home, they are all white with tinges of pink.
Going up hill again, some what rocky. It looks like it might have been a logging road at one time. It's humid today around 89 degrees. Yesterday it was 95 in the shade. Today it's supposed to cool off, we're expecting some rain and thunder storms in the afternoon.
At Quarry Gap Shelter and took a picture. It was two small shelters put together under one roof side by side with a sky light in the middle and a picnic sat in the middle, so it was in out of the rain. Had a big long porch on the front. It had flower pots hanging from the porch an little stream in front and flowers planted and a nice bench. On the porch there were two coach like seats on each corner of the porch and the other little touch was a little tiny American Flag. In the back was a close line. One of the nicest shelter I've seen.
We've come about 5 miles out. The terrain has been really good, like walking in a park. About 2 to 4 foot wide and lined with rhododendrons, laurels and blue berry bushes. A lot of white pine and hemlocks in this area. We still in Caledonia State Park.
We've had 3 major hill so far of short duration, but we haven't been able to make about 2 1/2 miles an hour. Even though we doing 20 miles today, it still should end up being a very short day.
Eating lunch a Birch Run Shelter, resting for a little and then moving on toward Pine Grove Furnace State Park.
The rest of the trail into Pine Grove Furnace State Park was down hill, through lots of pine forests. Some sections got very, very rocky, difficult to travel for a while. Over all it was decent hiking trail. We stayed at the Pine Grove Furnace Hostel, which is a huge big brick house that once belonged to the owner of the Pine Grove Furnace that was here in the 1800's.
We went into the store where you could eat your half gallon of ice cream, I didn't even attempt it! I did have 2 scoops of ice cream and a hamburger and Simon had hamburger.
The hostel doesn't allow dogs, but I ask her if I could sleep on her front porch with Simon, so it cost me six dollar last night and she gave me a cot to sleep on. I was the most comfortable out of everybody that stayed there because I had some air flow moving and it was pretty warm inside. Had a good hiking day!
