| I left the shelter a 9:05am. That's the latest I've had to leave the shelter is a good while. I finally made it back up the hill to the AT and started north. I can see lake Rutherford from here. | |
| I standing on top of rocks looking over Lake Rutherford. I have a real good view of the lake. It looks like a fairly small lake, it's really hazy this morning. In the foreground there's a lot of dead trees, probably from wind. This whole section from the shelter has been nothing but rocks, some large boulders going up and right now I'm going down a real steep set of large boulders. Some with ledges, drop offs. One steep ascent with nothing but rock, big, big rocks. | |
| The trail has gotten a lot wider and a lot of beautiful fern along side of the trail. Stopped at the ranger's station for a few minutes and I'm going into High Point State Park now on the AT and then shortly turn down and go to the little camp store, get a shower, washed and cleaned up. | |
| The at in the ark area is rocky and I exposed out on a ledge right now, that's hot and humid. I am enjoying the blackberries through here. You cannot believe this pile of rocks I'm just about to go up, it's really high, straight up, I don't see how in the world a hunter could come in here and hunt bear or deer. | |
| Coming into county road 519. Crossed 519 into a well trimmed open field. Back into the cool shelter of the woods, what do I see to my right, a nice big rock pile fence. Crossed over a gravel road. I've crossed over so many stone fences that I just quit counting. | |
| I just crossed a stile, it's the first crossing since I left PA. Simon has crossed so many stiles by now that he just crossed right over and doesn't pay any attention to them anymore. Going down through a cow pasture. | |
| Passing fresh beaver cuttings, the trail is leading around an open field. A lot of bee bond and goldenrods. Going around an edge of a corn field. This is the first corn field I've seen along the AT since I left Ohio. | |
| Got lost again, walked about a quarter of a mile up a very straight road, so I came back to my last stile crossing and when I looked to my left I could see the AT sign. I have now just reached Glimmer Road, so I still have quite a few more miles to go. I finally crossed over 2 streams that have a little bit of running water. I just had a Bard Owl fly over my head and land in near by tree. | |
The trail is running along side of a little
creek gorge and there is some water in that
creek also. Maybe that's a good sign that we'll get into more
water and won't have a lot of problems. I just came out to a
little road and guess who was there? A bear and her little
cubs off to my left crossing the road. I just crossed Goodrich
Road, and going up to the top of the hill. I kept an eye out
and sure enough she was following me up the hill, I stuck up my
poles and started clicking and yelling a little bit and she stood
there and watched me. It looks like she only has one cub. |
|
| I am going across a cement pond dam. Water looks pretty green and dirty. Breaking out into an open meadow and getting a little bit of a breeze. Makes me feel better. My guess the mama bear was bring the baby to the pond to get water. I wasn't going to hang around to find out. | |
| Now we are at the top of this hill where the wind is really blowing good and I'm going to rest here for a couple of seconds before moving on. Can see a little bit of the hills in the distance. Still on the hazy side. | |
| Coming across Culver Rd. It's not the one I wanted, but it does have a sigh on it that says well water 100 yards. I'm going to hike to Union town and sleep in the cemetery with the dead people tonight. It's to far to go on to the next shelter and they don't have any water. | |
Going
across boardwalks in a wet marshy areas, also across a bridge.
The maintainers have build several board walks in this area.
There is some cattails blooming. I would like to know what
this beautiful purple stuff is. I feel like I'm in Atlantic
City walking on the board walk. The deer flies are terrible
coming through here. They are giving Simon a bad time.I'm getting ready to cross Unionville Rd. I'm glad they have these roads are named. It would be hard to tell where you are without them. I've got 1 and 4 tenths of a mile to get into Unionville. I am Horler's General Store and going to get permission to sleep with the dead tonight. |
