Montebello, VA to Harpers Creek Harper's
Beautiful sunny weather, clear skies.  White puffy clouds with a yellow cast from the sunrays.  Views were clear as far as I could see in the distance.  The first day in the Blue Ridge Parkway area without haze from air pollution.
Shuttled back from Montebello to where we left off on Fish Hatcherry Rd.  Started on the AT 11:20am.  Most of the trail was easy hiking, short ups and downs and small rocks to Spy Rock.
Spy Rock was approx. 75' high above my head.  From the ground. I could see small shrubs and cedars growing on top.  I tried climbing to the top to see the 360 degree views of the surrounding valleys.  I decided that the view wasn't worth breaking an arm or leg trying to climb the ledges, and having to spend time in a hospital.  Simon was climbing the rocks ok, but, again I was afraid I couldn't get him down once up.  I just experienced the base of the rock and enjoyed the laurel and rhododendron from the bottom.
We passed the Priest Shelter and started climbing up Priest Mt. 4,063 feet.  Easy switchbacks, smooth trail, going up, but a different story going down!  Large boulders, ledges, drop offs in the trail that was continuous all the way to Cripple Creek.  That mountain had an ever ready battery that went on and on!
Enjoyed the newly constructed swinging bridge across the Tye River.  The river area looked as if it might be a great place for fishing and camping.  I made it to Harpers Shelter about 8:00pm. 820.3 miles From Springer Mt.
