| I leaving
Pinefield Hut Shelter at 7:20am |
| There was a
bear hanging around the shelter last night. She was so tame
you practically reach out and pet her. This morning there was
a doe standing in the trail, just a I toped the hill. |
|
The rays of the sunshine looks pretty
coming through the tree canopy. I just crossed over the
Skyline Drive at the Pinefield Gap. Good trail so far this morning,
just dirt covered, a few pebbly rocks here and there, roots and
grasses along the side that have been mowed back. |
|
I 'm now walking on top of this ridge line.
Large boulders along the sides, but none in the trail.
Entering an area where there are large trees 16' to 24' in diameter.
Very fragrant in this area with honey suckle vines. One for
sure people behind me don't have to worry about cobwebs. My
head is just the right height to catch all the cobwebs going across
the trail. Just below my knees are the right height to catch
those cobwebs, so I'm invariably wiping off not perspiration, but
lots of cobwebs. I don't like the misquotes that buzz around
my ears. |
|
I finally ended up at the top of the hill
where I'm going to be hiking the ridge line for a while. I
been hiking a very steep incline for the past mile and half.
On top of the ridge is an open area, Simon and I going to stop and
get a drink of water. I've just startled a bunch of little quail. |
|
I starting to climb up Little Round
Cup Mountain, looks like it's straight up. I just had a
friendly skunk pass through this area, I can tell by the wonderful
odor that was left behind. I just hope that he is not to
friendly. |
|
I'm getting into a really rough area with a
lot of boulders. You think you're on top of the mountain , but
you are not, it just like a roll coaster, up and down. I just
got through climbing another really steep section. The sweat
is rolling off my brow and down into my eyes and the water faucets
were turned at the end of my elbows. |
|
I'm coming up on Sniff Roach Gap and going
to stop in the shade to get a bite to eat and some water before
moving on. I'm passing Hightop Hut Shelter on St. Rt. 33.
I spooked a young fawn and its mother, they were sleeping close to
the trail. Hightop Mt. is quite rocky with boulders on both
sides of the trail, but the trail itself is pretty good, just steep
and weedy in some areas. Coming into Black Rock Gap area and
at a sign that said the Black Rock Shelter water supply may be dry,
so that we had to go down the fire road for a 100 yards more and get
our water. I was afraid to take a chance with so little water
between shelters. While I was down there I cooked my supper
and ate by the creek. |
|
It's 4pm and going into Black Rock Shelter
and to stay for the night. |
