It was about 8:25 when we got started on the trail and Will was going to meet his daughter and come back and pick us up on the Skyline Drive by Friday morning. It was an uneventful day. Got into some boulders and rock steps that we has to go down. We could hear thunder off in the distance and we knew it would rain sometime during the day. By the afternoon it has become very muggy and hot where the water was just dripping off our brows and legs and elbows. We made it to the Lewis Mt. Campground. Went in to get something to drink and a snack to nibble on. We made it just in time. We had just gotten our backpack off and it just started to pour. We stayed there during the thunder storm, relaxed and for an hour or more. Then came into Bearfence Hut where we stayed the night. 901 miles from Springer Mt. A new hiker came in 'GH' he stayed the night with Tortuga and I for the night.
Some time in the early morning a little fawn came inside. Simon heard it and got up, and I thought he had to go out, then Tortuga said there is a fawn at your feet. So I finally get my light on, the fawn about a month and half old. It just stood there, it wasn't going to move. Tortuga reached out and patted it on the back and it didn't do anything, just stood there, so she reached out to pat it on the back again, it took off and went up around the steps on to the shelter floor around the top of her head and He's and came over to our side. Well Simon didn't know what to think about it either, he was petrified! It ran in to a 5 gallon bucket in the corner, it rattled and scared the poor little to death. Got back up on the floor of the shelter again and I finally told everybody to just lift up their heads and I moved it around toward the back and Tortuga shooed it off.
Got up this morning and glanced to my right and there was a big bear walking across the log just above me. I ran back to get my camera and then it was to much into the weeds to really take a good picture.
