Leaving Bland at 8:30am.  Drizzling rain, put on our rain coats.  Had a little road walking to do on 612, but starting into the woods now.  My pack feels very heavy today, coming out of town with about 30 lbs, that's a little bit to much.
We're doing a steady climb up hill and going around the side of the hill, but there's some very steep sections.
Hiking on the ridge top now!  A lot of white pines in this area and hard woods.  The trail goes up and down.  I don't know how long this goes, but we'll be hiking the ridge top all day.
This last time when the helicopter went over he some beams or poles for a construction of some kind.  There was a shelter in GA that has a helicopter to bring in their poles and stuff.
The pink honeysuckles are the only one that have an odor.  We've seen pink lady slippers, some purple flocks and some other little purple flowers that I didn't recognize.
The helicopter went over again, he has either has logs or metal beams of some kind.  At least now we know he's working  and EJ didn't hire him to drop a water balloon on my head.  Spirit just said, " don't know he could miss dropping  water balloon on my head with neon pack cover I've got on my back pack".  Only I'm not going to tell you what color it is.
We're at a section that has a lot of white pines and rhododendron along side the trail.  Occasionally we get some views of the mountain ranges.  It's a little on the hazy side, but we can still see 7 or 8 mountain over.  The mountains range from a dark green to a darker blue, to a real, real faint blue along the horizon.
Going down the trail in a little pine grove area.  White pines are wispy when you walk by them and it's a sun dappled area.
This a note to all the Garfield elementary students, particularly Melissa Fletchers first grade room. "I want every one to have a safe and enjoyable summer, have your teacher give the AT website so you can follow me this summer.  Simon and Lucky Bear and myself will see you in the fall when you come back to school, probably not before October."
This a note to Sharon Smith in VA: If you're reading this journal send me a note to either Greensboro or Harper's Ferry Post Office, general delivery, and what ever their zip code would be, and put on there hold for through hiker and tell me where you were going to meet me in VA.
Hear the leaves rustle as I walk, it sounds like fall there's so many oak leaves down on the ground. Note: I can hear the rustle of leaves as Sandy walks! Kathy
Took a short break on top of the hill and had some lunch, we lightened our load by 2 beagles, 2 packs of peanut butter, 4 small jellies and a couple candy bars.  Believe it or not that helps!
I have seen several white Jacobs Ladder in bloom.  We just had a rattle snake cross in front of us about 3 feet long with big old rattles on the end.  Spirit walked over to take a picture of him and he had already crawled over to side.  He didn't want his picture take, he started to coil and shaking those rattlers.  I got Simon by the chain and we went around fast.  I'd rather see the bear than rattle snakes.
Going around the mountain, this trial is very slated.  It hasn't been straightened out and if you aren't careful, you could go over the hill very easily.
Made our way to Jenny Knob Shelter at 4:30pm.  Took Simon's pack off and decide to go down to the stream which is about 50 to 75 yards away to get water.  It wasn't anything more than a trickle, but got water OK.
