May 30, 2005
Left a 8:50am hiking back up hill to the AT, should be in Pearisburg in early afternoon.  We had biscuits, butter and jelly, orange juice, coffee this morning for breakfast before we left.
Back on the AT and guess what going straight up on rocks and more rocks.  Going through an open woods area, with the usual hard woods, some scrub bushes, orange and pink honeysuckles blooming and good size buds on the Laurel, just about ready to pop out.  Haven't seen any wild flowers.  The trail has smoothed out and is fairly level right now.  Looks like it's going to be a beautiful day.
Going through an area that really cool because it has larger tree canopy with a little sun peeking through.  A lot of oak trees, probably 16 to 18 inched in diameter.  Just came out on a fire road.  There's some good size pines in this area.  We're hiking up this forest service fire road and the rhododendrons and in full bloom, ranging from a dark pink to a light lilac..  A lot of small ferns for undergrowth and a bunch of striped maple trees.  Stopped in at Doc's Shelter for a short rest and a water break and also to sigh the register book.  The rhododendrons blooms are the size of a soft ball.
Just heard a den of little kit foxes, off in a distance.  They were really noisy for a little while.  We're still hiking on the same road, however we're going up in elevation gradually.  We've started hiking up a 2300' elevation to Angel's Rest.  It's straight up to the ridge line and the trail is full of tiny little rocks making it difficult to hike on.  Standing in the clearing under power lines I can look way off into the distance.  The last mountain I can see is a light blue up against the horizon with big white clouds.
That was a real steep incline we just came up.  No switch backs, full of rocks, extremely steep.  Up on the ridge line now, and we can look over into the valley on the east side.  Trail goes along some really rocky areas, layered rock, exposed rock and then widens out and becomes fairly grassy.  We're hiking right on top of Boulder Rock Cliff.  We had to hop from one boulder rock to another.
Stopped by a spring, had some water and cooked some noodles to replenish our body strength.  We were very tire after coming up to the top of the hill and decided to get something to eat and rest a while.
Going down a rocky area just along the edge of the outcroppings.  The trail goes through 2 big boulder piles.  Going out past the rocks to a place they call Angels Rest Rock.  Angels Rest Rock looks over one part of the town of Pearisburg.  The rocks are laying horizontal, diagonal and veridical all in the same big pile.  I just came across what looked like rabbit fur in the trail.  Some poor rabbit has met his demise.  Probably that mother fox taking that rabbit back to her kits.
We're going down hill 3 miles into the town of Pearisburg, where we'll spend the night at the Rondaview Motel.  Phyllis is waiting on us there with a mail drop and we'll go to the post office tomorrow.
The motel was just a few hundred yard from the AT.
