September 04, 2005
Left the White House Boat landing just a little bit before 9:00am.  I'm on the 2 tenths mile back to the AT.  I enjoyed the White House Landing.  I saw a loons on the water, saw the cow moose several different times grazing.  Beautiful sunset.  Linda and Bill are pleasant hosts to be around.  I had a wonderful pancake breakfast this morning.  With big scrambled eggs, toast and jelly and bacon.   I certainly didn't leave there hungry!
Back on the AT south at 9:04am.  Here again hiking through a pine forest, lots of rocks, lots of rocks, a lot of downed trees and mud puddles.  The guys that I stayed with last that were north bound said that they had waded mud and water puddles, the swamps and up to their knees in mud.  They crossed rivers up around their waist and higher in some places.  There was nine of them together and they formed a human chair to cross the creek area.  Wish me luck when I get to those places, that I can get over without incident.  That was another reason I decided to stay yesterday afternoon.  Not only to take a shower and to wash my clothes, but to give the water another day to recede after the hurricane showers went through.  How it's going to be I don't know?
I've been coming through some very rocky, sloppy swamp land.  Thank heavens most of the water has receded below the pine boards that look like beams.  I was able to hike on those pine logs and keep my feet pretty well dry.  Here comes some more right now!  These boardwalks are just a little bit wider.  The other ones were small that I had to cross over.
I can moose tracks in the mud.  I think there's a swamp to my right.  Probably a good place for them to come in to eat.  So far the trail has been fairly level.  Of course you have the rocks and roots and the bridges.
I'm coming into a lake area, I'm not sure of the name of it.  Creek crossing #3 already this morning and It's 9:50am.  I crossed them on pine logs.  The water has receded, so maybe those are good signs.
I'm standing out on a large boulder next to the lake and if I was coming north this would be my first real view of Katahdin.  It's absolutely beautiful day.  The Katahdin Mountain is clear with a few clouds above it.  I can the big rocks that I came down over.  It is surrounded by smaller mountains.  I might have be able to see this lake from the top.
