September 13, 2005
Heading south from the Northern Out Doors area.  I plan on doing 14 miles today.  Right now going through white pines and redwood forest mixed.  It's level and I hear that it's pretty good terrain between here and the Bigelow Mountains.  We'll see!  Time now is 9:55am.
I'm following the Kennebec River down stream to Steve Langley's Store and Ferry. Chainsaw was waiting at the Ferry as I cam across the Kennebec River.  I have one soaked pack.  The back of my pack is soaking wet from the water that was in the canoe.  Pierce Pond outlet is 3.3 miles,  Long Falls Rd. is 16.7 and Avery Peak which is 4,088 feet is 26.7 miles and Maine highway is which will be in Stratton at 35.4 miles.
From the Kennebec River I had to come straight up the hill, up some rock steps and a whole series of wooden log steps to get to the top of the hill where I registered to go through this section.  I think I'll be circling around the side of the hill and be following the stream most of the day.
This is kind of a dumb set up.  They take you on top of the hill let you register and turn you around right back to the stream where your hiking right next to it.  The water is very  clear in this stream.  There is a very swift current and a lot of little water falls and one or two good swimming holes.  I thought pine roots were terrible, but you should see the roots on thee cedar trees.  They are awful to try to step in, around, or over.  Right in the trail their are a lot of big rocks too.  I still above the water roller coaster style, take me up over the hill and back down to the water.  At one point I was right on the water's edge.  Now I'm half way up the hill again.
These are nice big cedar trees.  They would make a nice log house.  A lot of metaphoric rock in this area.  Also bluish-green slate.  Real pretty.  I ran into Trail Runner.  I hadn't see her since Spirit and I had run into her in the Virginia's with her chocolate lab, Coty.
Just passed Pierce Pond Stream Falls.  They are beautiful!  There are 4 that I can see.  The roar from these falls makes Sandy hard to hear.  Kathy  I've been told that Pierce Pond Lean-to is beautiful, but I'm not going there, I wan to make as much mileage as I can.
I just hiked across the dam of Pierce Pond.  There are so many trails through that it is hard to spot the white blazes.  I just met Sky Walker and 2 or 3 other people that I didn't know.   The trail from the pond comes on the east side of the pond and kind of skirts it.  It is rather level up through here, yet at the same time it is a fooler, it has a very slight grade to it.  Some of the real muddy area have cleared up from the previous rain.  We're looking for rain on Wed night, Thru night and Friday.
There is a lot of hard wood mixed in with the cedar in this area.  Cedar, when you have a bunch of them together have a very distinctive odor too.  I seem to be weaving in and out of old logging roads.
Just coming by a large swamp area, it looks like an excellent place for beaver dams.  I hear some frogs.  So do I.  Kathy  I'm back into the scrubby pines and cedars.  Just passed Sundance Kid whom I haven't seen since Tenn.  He was the guy that stayed with me at Will's house one night.  I just passed Hit Man going north.  I'm coming up on East Carry Pond.  It sure is big!  The wind had pick up, even the water current on the pond has a lot of ripples on it.  This looks exactly like a farm pond we have at home.  I going around the north side of the pond and that wind is really pushing the waves right in.  I crossed the upper end of it on a bridge.  Still going around the edges of the water.  A lot of pine so it's fairly soft through here.  A lot of low bushes and cedars mixed in here too.
The trail is moving away from the pond now.  Good thing, it was getting pretty cold.  I'm out on a graveled road way right now.  Just went across the bridge that might be the head waters for Middle Carry Pond.  Back into the pine woods again.  Here's the bog and it looks like it's quite extensive going across there.  Wish me luck that I don't go in the drink.  Well I didn't go in the drink, but I near did.  One of those logs just as I stepped on it started rolling with me, but I went faster and got across.  Some of them were moving on the ends where they had them nailed down.
The sun is setting over Middle Carry Pond.  Getting back into the woods now.  It's looks like I'm at the West Carry Pond Lean-to.  Sounds like I've got some company.  It's been Tuesday and easy day.  About a 14 mile day.  So I'll talk to you tomorrow.
