Today I had a zero day. I had a bit
of an infected leg. Went to the doctor yesterday and got some
antibiotics for it, so I'm zeroing Tuesday the 27th. Leaving
on Wednesday the 28th. |
|
September the 28th and I'm at the top of
Mt. Washington summit. I'm going to do a 15 mile day,
hopefully I hope I can get in before dark. I'm going to have
to go from memory because when I was hiking off Mt. Washington I had
to concentrate so much on footing and the rock hoping I could not
record and use the mike together. |
|
Coming off of Mt. Washington; I went up
with the intention of hiking form Mt Washington to the Tuckerman
Ravine Trail and then down to Pinkum Notch which would have been a
much shorter day. The Tuckerman Ravine Trail was3.8 miles down
hill, but I decided that it was such a pretty day that I would never
have another shot at it this time of the year, so after talking to
the ranger I soon started on the 15 mile trek. It was hiking
on boulders the whole time from one big rock to another. In
most cases I had a 180 degree view of the valley below me.
Very beautiful, all above tree line, very little vegetation at all
along the way except for pines and real low shrubs. The low
shrubs that I have been talking previously on mountains is a form of
an azalea. Then some ferns and what looked to me like rock
crest. I was told by the lady who took me up to the top of Mt.
Washington in the tour bus that all the white trees that I was
seeing are different types of a birches, not aspens. The
Madison Hut was beautiful, except it was closed. It was a
stone structure that has been there for years. Then 2 sides of
have had been added on. |
|
Left there and climbed up Mt. Madison was a
extremely steep with real large boulders that I had to do a hand
over hand. Nothing where I had a lot of dangerous overhangs
that I had to go around. I don't mind hiking on large boulders
where you have to step from one to another. There was a few
places where I had to sit down and scoot off. Very few. |
|
I made down to the bottom and picked up the
Old Jackson Road. Coming down off of Mt Madison was extremely
steep and took a little time. By the time I got to Old Jackson
Rd it was about 5:00pm and I still had about 5 miles to go.
Crossed several streams in that area, I was about one and half miles
out of Pinkum Notch to go after dark. I always carry a flash
light so I was OK. |
|
I got into Pinkum Notch at about 7:40pm and
went to the lodge and called Mogie and Ron and they came and picked
me up. By the time I got to Maugeen and Ron's house I took a
look at my infected leg and I already had some red running down the
front of my shin bones and It kind of had hurt off and on, but it
didn't stop me from hiking. My leg was swollen and I knew that
the next day I needed to get back to the Doctor and have it checked
again. |
|
It was quite an experience to go across Mt.
Washington and Adams and be above tree line. Before I got off
Madison the wind had really started to pick up and I was starting to
get a little chilly. It was a good day. Certainly one
that I will defiantly remember. |
|
September 29th was a zero day. I had
to go to the health clinic and had the nurse take a look at my leg
and she said to go up to the hospital and have some antibiotics.
Maugeen too me up to the hospital and the Doctor looked at my leg
and he said that I needed an IV of antibiotics. They also
lanced the area and cleaned it all out. Put a big bandage on
it and sent me home. I had to zero on Friday and the I went
back to the Doctor on Saturday and they gave me another IV of
antibiotics and checked the absence area and then sent me home and I
just need to call then in a couple of day to check on a blood
culture to make sure that they have me on the right kind of
medication. He told me I could start hiking on Saturday in the
afternoon. |
