Welcome to the Problem of the Week (P.O.T.W.)!!!

Guess and Check #2

This week’s question is: Christian and Sam went to Myers’ Maison of Miscellaneous Matter.  Christian needs to buy a mallet for his xylophone.  He sees some for $5.00 but he doesn’t buy them because, being a superlative xylophone player, he knows that they are of inferior quality.  He sees a superior one that costs more.  His friend, Sam, needs a strong magnet for his science kit.  Christian finds him one that costs $5.00 but, unfortunately, it is not strong enough.  Needing to impress his science teacher, Sam buys a superior magnet.  Sam’s magnet costs $7.00 more than Christian’s xylophone mallet.  Together, the magnet and the mallet cost $23.00.  What is the cost of Christian’s xylophone mallet?  (4 marks)  What is the cost of Sam’s magnet?  (4 marks)
