Welcome to the Problem Of The Week (P.O.T.W.)!!!

NUMBER THEORY #1 (Multiples and Factors)

Mr. Myers enjoys Douglasdale’s premier pizzeria, Jon’s Pizza.  He particularly likes to order the “Colossus” which is a pizza big enough to feed a Greek army (a joke that you will appreciate next year when you study Greek mythology in social studies).  Mr. Myers has invited 16 friends to eat this “Colossus” pizza.  12 of his friends have told him that they will come.  The rest of his friends won’t know if they will be able to come until the party starts.  Mr. Myers wishes to cut the “Colossus” pizza into pieces so it can be shared equally among 12 or 16 friends.  Here are your questions:

·                          How many friends have not replied? (4 marks) – be careful…you must show ALL your work and units!

·                          Into how many pieces may the “Colossus” pizza be cut so that it can be shared equally among 12 or 16 people?

                   HINT: use a T-chart or a Number Line or a 100 Chart! (5 marks)

·                          How many slices would 12 people get? (4 marks)

·                          How many slices would 16 people get? (4 marks)

·                          BONUS: Is there really such a thing as a “Colossus” pizza? – Go to Jon’s Pizza to find out!  The worse that can happen is that you’ll have the best pizza you or your parents have ever tasted!!! (1 mark)

TOTAL MARKS:                    /17

REMEMBER TO INCLUDE YOUR UNITS AND SHOW ALL YOUR WORK OR YOUR WORK WILL NOT BE CORRECT!!!

Have fun!
