PINK FLOYD

Pink Floyd is a highly theatrical British progressive rock band that has been making successful albums on and off since the late 1960s. The original group included Syd Barrett, was born January 6, 1946, on guitar and vocals; Richard Wright, was born July 28, 1945, on keyboards and vocals; Roger Waters, was born September 6, 1944, on bass and vocals; Nick Mason, was born January 27, 1945, on drums. The band started as a psychedelic band and had two British hit singles in 1967. In 1968 singer and guitarist David Gilmour, was born March 6, 1944, joined Pink Floyd, replacing the increasingly erratic Barrett that year. Dark Side of the Moon (1973) was the band's American breakthrough, with the hit song "Money." The album was on the charts for 741 weeks, and it defined Pink Floyd's sound: gloomy synthesizers, overdubbed spoken phrases, and themes of alienation. The group toured with an elaborate light and stage show for Dark Side, and the subsequent Wish You Were Here (1975) and Animals (1977). The Wall (1979) included the number 1 hit "Another Brick in the Wall," and the tour had the most elaborate theatrical show of its time. After The Wall the band began to break up, and each member pursued solo projects. In the mid-1980s, Waters sued other band members over the use of the Pink Floyd name. Gilmour and Mason eventually won the rights to the name and continue to record and tour as Pink Floyd; records include Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987), The Division Bell (1994), and the live Pulse (1995). In 1990, Waters recorded a live, all-star version of The Wall at the site of the former Berlin Wall, which was released on disc and video. In 1996, Pink Floyd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
