Mourning the Loss of a Beloved Pet

December 1, 2003

The little lizard who lived in the clutter in the spare bedroom was discovered dead by my wife this morning. His scrawny little body was gentle laid to rest in the yard with a flick of the wrist out the window. His memory will live on in this picture taken the day before.

While he will surely be missed by all, his place in the family has been filled by the little white gecko who lives behind the picture frame hanging in the bedroom. No, I am not joking. I just spent five minutes trying for a photo but he is hiding somewhere else or hunting bugs.

Our new hens and pair of turkeys arrived today. We now have 11 hens, 2 roosters, and two turkeys roaming about the property. May they be fruitful an multiply. The ducks are still backordered I guess and no sign of the guinea hens yet. Our hen has been sitting on her nest for must be two weeks now and we hope to see 4 little chicks running about soon.

This is my first December living here so it is interesting to see Christmas in the tropics. There are fewer decorations and we arent bombarded with the manditory shopping blitz here. We got a little plastic tree up and some lights to the delight of my children. Every night the kids are out setting off fireworks as part of the celebration and some are pretty loud. A few other families have modest little trees and and lights and it all seems very pleasent. I will try to remember to write more on this as the end of the month comes closer.
