This afternoon we noticed that Mr. Ed the horse was limping. I dont know much about horses but this one is really tame to I approached him to take a look. After letting him get used to me a bit, I was able to lift his hoof and check his leg. All this is new to me but I wasnt able to find any problems.
In the afternoon the owner of the farm where our animals are temporarily lodged stopped by to tell me a new male calf was born. This new addition came to a huge prize holstien with a famous bull for a father (Grand Slam II). We plan on raising this bull for breeding so it is an important animal to us We went out in the rain to find the calf in the pasture next to his momma, and up on his feet already. The three of us worked on teaching him to nurse but he couldn't get the idea. Eventually, I got a thumb in the side of his mouth and started squirting milk directly in while moving his head closer to the teat. Soon the calf was nursing on his own and we headed home for the night.
