The Trial Run

Dawn Milking

I love the country in the morning. Everything is so quiet when all the dominicans are sleeping. The birds are singing, the crickets etc. The guys brought the cows up and started up the morning feeding and milking. We sprayed for flys last night, and the cows seemed much happier today. As mentioned earlier, the fences arent done yet so the cows were wandering everywhere. One even got into the feed alley which is always a mess.

The fence is built

Well, two of the fences are built. Two more to go. I spent all morning working on it and I think it came out pretty nice. Four rails, 8 foot on center posts made mostly out of coconut palm and royal palm. We need to paint it with used motor oil or the termites will be very happy.

The afternoon feeding

The new fences made everything run much smoother. We still have work to do but progress has been rapid.

Felicita Saves a Cow

I spent all day working mainly on fences but Felicita had a wild afternoon. On her way up to pick up the grass in the truck, she decided to stop over at the other farm to check on the animals. One of the workers there told her a cow was starting to give birth that morning. Well it was late afternoon now, and no one had seen the cow so Felicita went off searching. She had just about given up and was on her way out when she found the cow still in labor. Feet out and no head yet, so off for a trip to the vet. I will leave the details out but the vet saved them both and left us with a bill for 600 pesos or about 17 dollars (not bad for a field visit).
