To see two old guys cut a raw log into lumber the old way was pretty cool. These old guys were real pro's with both and axe and a saw.
They first cut the log flat one two sides with an axe. Then they set up a horizontal log with two beams leaning against it. The log was then rolled to the foot of the beams and lifted using ropes and the beams as levers. Forked posts were then used to hold the cross beam in place.
The log was then marked using a snap line and a plumb bob and the sawing began. It took them about a day to cut a 12 inch log 10 feet long into 3 inch planks.
