Cattleman's Fair

To farmers everywhere a fair is a big and important event and it is not any different here in the Dominican Republic. The Santo Domingo Cattleman's weeklong fair must be one of the biggest in the country and the photos I was able to take really can't do it justice.

Unfortunately we arrived a day late so we missed the dairy cattle judgeing but we were able to see the beef cattle judging instead. The Judge was american with a deep south accent (Texan I think) and he really seemed to know his stuff.

We wandered through the animal housing admiring all the fine animals on display.

Here is the sign for the farm of a very good friend of ours. Behind the sign is a beautiful cow of his that very nearly took first place. In front of the sign is my favorite wife.

In addition to animal showing and contests there is horseback riding, shopping, and agrocultural exhibits. Hipolito paid to have busses sent to every town in the country so that all the school kids could come down to the fair. The fair grounds were filled with kids riding horses, watching contests, shopping and having a general good time.

And last but not least, the ballon man. No fair could be complete with out a ballon man.
