Driving in the DR has to be one of the worlds most interesting sports. So much is going on at any given moment the uninitiated can quickly become distracted from the task at hand. Most of the best photos are missed because it is impossible to get the camera out in time. The image quality isnt so hot because most were taken through the windshield while I was driving.
Whenever a friend rents a car down here, I always tell them not to drive at night. This photo is one reason why not.
I love trying to catch as many crazy things going on at once in these street panarama shots. Please note the overloaded publico (bus), tractor, school girls on a pasola, and pedestrian in this shot.
Another typical highway scene. From left to right: Guy trying to sell fish, Daihatsu truck making a U turn, Cattle truck, 2 stroke motorcycle belching smoke, pedestrian on the shoulder, house built 30 feet from the side of a major highway.
Yet another crazy highway shot. The motorcycle on the left is carrying a political flag supporting the current administration. In the center is an overloaded truck and a large front end loader. The little car is trying to pass between them. A few seconds later I crossed on the left hand shoulder to get around that nonsence. The motorcycle on the right seems to have stopped to contemplate the speed limit sign or something.
I really had to slow down to catch this shot. The bed on this truck wouldnt go down all the way and it was so crooked it was amazing it could still travel.
This guy is either worried about rollover risk or wants to make a lot of matresses.
Well at least he is in the right lane.
If this guy isnt careful he will change this flatbed into a "dump" truck.
Would you care to transport a full sheet of plywood on the back of a motorcycle? I snapped this shot while riding my motorcycle so I guess I was one of the road hazards too.
