NAPPY ROOTS

Nappy Roots is that 6-man group from Kentucky that has taken the rap game and brought it up to their own level. The fellas (Skinny Deville, B-Stille, Ron Clutch, R. Prophet, Big V and Scales) describe their sound as "their reality."

Nappy Roots began their quest to be heard back in late '96. They worked their asses off trying to get their issue on. The fellas claim that they not only skipped some classes in this quest, but they also skipped some meals -- just "tryin’ to start a dream."

Nappy Roots released their first CD, "Country Fried Cess" themselves. They established themselves by doing gigs with Digital Underground, Youngbloods, Jim Crowes, 112, Cashmoney, 8 Ball, Ruffryders, MJG, Sole, and Twista. The group claimed fame mostly based on word of mouth, not to mention that they were just plain good. They quickly developed an underground following.

In the summer of '98 the group got a deal with Atlantic Records and later released the song "Riches to Ragz" on the "South Park" soundtrack.

Their first official debut cd is "Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz" which was released earlier this year. The album "Watermelon, Chicken & Gritz" has got Nappy Roots sopping up the hits like a biscuit with gravy -- 'Po Folks' being the most rotated at the moment. But don't sleep on other tracks like 'Slums', 'Blowin' Trees' and 'Ballin' on a Budget'.

And these dudes know how to budget -- or get their hustle on, whichever you prefer. In their relatively short amount of time in the limelight, the Nappy Roots have formed several business entities. Their main one is Deep Rooted Productions LLC. ET's Music Record Shop, Tree House Studios, Success Story Publishing, and the website www.deeprooted.com are all the other businesses under the Deep Rooted Productions umbrella. These businesses handle merchandising, promotion, recording, and even other artists. (All I know is, the Nappy Roots T-shirts are bangin'!)

Now we all know that once you find a group you like the next thing you know they're acting like they forgot who the hell they were, but Nappy Roots says don't even think about them acting all silly and flossing ice and what not. Luckily, they're happy with the simpler things in life.

Skinny DeVille says, "We're just trying to make people realize that it's good to just be you. That's essentially what Nappy Roots is about. We're glamorizing being average."

Well if being average will sell them more records then these guys will definitely be at the top for a long time.
