Sanaa, the second oldest of five siblings, studied law but eventually changed her major to pursue the arts. She has a B.A. in English, and an M.F.A. (from the Yale School of Drama). Her family supported her decision to become an actress, and Sanaa packed her bags and moved to Cali to pursue her career as an actress.
While some may say that she's a new-jack who supposedly blew up in Hollywood because of her roles alongside ex-boyfriend Omar Epps in "The Wood" and "Love and Basketball," they may be surprised to learn that Sanaa actually has a few credits under her belt.
Sanaa has worked in theater (Imperceptible Mutabilities, Twelfth Night, The Good Person of Szechuan, Three Sisters and Romeo and Juliet), on television (Moesha, Family Matters, In the House, NYPD Blue and the NBC TV series, Lateline. She also starred in several made-for-television movies including "Miracle in The Woods", where she starred with Meredith Baxter and Della Reese.) As for the big screen, Sanaa is one of Hollywood's rising stars, but she is no stranger to the arts. She grew up around "the business" all her life and is very much aware that there are downsides that will come along with all the success. She has appeared in the folowing movies: "Drive," "Blade," "The Wood," "The Best Man," "Life," and of course "Love and Basketball". Sanaa has the ability to make her characters seem "real" and believable, and it is that trait has gotten her recognized.
Sanaa has been described as young, Black, beautiful and gifted. And gifted shw is. In her portrayal of a singer striving for fame, fans were pleased to see Sanaa starring opposite Wesley Snipes (again) and also working with Gina Prince-Blythwood again (the director). Sanaa showed her stuff in the HBO film variation of Terri McMillan's "Disappearing Acts". After accepting the part, Sanaa was ready and willing to show the producers her stuff as she wanted to show off her singing talents, but producers opted for her to lip-synch instead.
Talk about steamy love scenes! Homegirl strutted her stuff all over that movie and if you missed it, you'd better ask somebody for the tape!
Her next role brought her to the set of "Catfish in Black Bean Sauce," and then she got her co-producing credits in "Finding Cassanova Brown" which featured Queen Latifah. But wait, she's not even warming up just yet. She was also spotted in Babyface's video, "What If," was the co-star of the film "Brown Sugar" alongside Taye Diggs again, and was also teamed up once agin with Queen Latifah, and the movie also featured Mos Def, Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker (both from Soul Food the Showtime series).
