*****Animal Underworld : Inside America's...Animal Underworld: Inside America's Black Market for Rare and Exotic Species
by Alan Green
From the Author "The real turning point of my investigation into the trade in exotic animals came in late 1996, during a conversation with one of the few experts on the subject. After a year and a half of research, I had finally concluded that this was at its heart a story about laundering--a tale of how unwanted animals ("surplus," as they're called) owned by zoos, universities, and theme parks were sold and traded until their origins had been entirely obscured. That way, no one could identify with certainty the previous owners of an animal landing at an auction, a private hunting preserve, an exotic-meat butcher, or an abominable roadside attraction."

"This Black Maket business in Rare and Exotic Species is absolutely appalling and criminal! Those involved in this type of "sport" and trade and those otherwise supporting these "commodities" are as much to blame. Many people buy exotics only to later get rid of these animals because they didn't make good pets. Rare and exotics species should be left to nature. Those that do make good pets are available through domestically raised breeding programs, just make sure you really want to be responible for your "pet" for it's lifespan. I'd love to have a pet tiger, but I don't have the environment or knowledge to properly care for a tiger. I'm not saying that everyone who owns exotic pets shouldn't be able to have them, just take proper care of them. Domestic breeding programs, changes in legislature and more severe criminal punishments would basically erradicate this type of "business". This same much needed legislation should be equally applicable to those who abuse animals, domestic or otherwise".
