The idea for the bear pipe came from the shape of the moose antler itself.  This is the piece of that I cut the bear pipe from.  I used a bow saw to cut the antler.

After I cut the antler out I shaped it with an electric drill with a drum sander on it.  I use rotary tools to carve the antler because it is so hard.

<<<This wood block is a piece of walnut that I am using for the stand to hold the pipe.

The stem on the Bear Pipe is made from the branch off of a sumac tree.  I like to use the Sumac to make pipe stems as the branches have a ring in the centre that is easily pushed out with a heated wire.

CEREMONIAL BEAR PIPE

The pipe is made from moose antler and when completed will be on display in La Have, Nova Scotia at Fort Point Museum.

The bear will be standing on a post, which will serve as a handle for the pipe.  The bowl of the pipe is in the back of the bears head and there will be a Shaman looking down into the bowl.  The stem of the pipe will be made from Sumack and the bear will be holding the pipe stem in his mouth.

Keep watching to see how the pipe changes as it is carved.
