Calee was sitting in her newly remodeled Chancellor's office. She glanced around the beautiful interior with an appreciative eye. She loved the newly acquired, and expensive, Greek tapestries, the highly polished marble floor, the comfortable oversized chaise lounge which could easily accommodate not only her self, but also any male guest if the occasion arose. She had positioned the chaise in the corner and it was covered in luxurious throw pillows made from the finest silks. She had also purchased a large, ornately carved desk that had been made specifically for her from the finest craftsmen in Athens. She pulled out her rich leather desk chair that was not only functional but had the added feature of built-in message. When she sat behind her desk she noticed that the growing mounds of paper work that had accumulated on her desk were now obstructing her view of all the beautiful items she'd decorate her office with.
"What an eye sore," she exclaimed. She tried to push the stacks of paper from her desk into the nearby trashcan even though she knew the trashcan couldn't possibly hold the massive amount of paper. The paperwork didn't budge. She stood up and with both hands she tried again, this time throwing her weight behind the attempt, but still the papers wouldn't move an inch. She sat back down in her chair exhausted and displeased. "I really have to do something about all this mess," she bemoaned. Unfortunately, she knew that her assistant, Antares, had been called away to the Underworld. Ever since Ares had started his summer war campaign there had been an overflow in the Underworld. Poor Antares was not only her assistant, but also Hades assistant as well, and Antares was now up to her eyeballs in processing the dead. With the rate of the death and destruction, her assistant may not make it back to campus until the fall and by then, the Chancellor muttered, "I'll be buried in papers and no one will be able to dig me out." The Chancellor shuddered with the thought. She stood up and walked around the desk and began to pace back and forth trying to decide what the best course of action would be to solve her growing problem. On her final pass of pacing, she glanced over at the large tapestry of Hercules and the Golden Fleece that was hanging to the left of her newly installed French doors, which opened onto her newly installed veranda, which now housed her newly installed personal hot tub. She looked closely at the bottom of the tapestry that reached from the ceiling all the way to the floor and noticed the bottom of the tapestry was moving slightly. Calee took a quick look at the French doors and then glanced at all her newly installed stained-glass windows to make certain that it wasn't just a breeze blowing the tapestry. When she'd determined that there was no breeze, she realized something was crawling around on the floor behind her Hercules tapestry. She quickly and stealthily moved to the wall and swiftly threw back the bottom corner of the tapestry. She was expecting to find a rat, but she was surprised to see the tiny lizard that was scurrying in a hurry towards a rather large hole in the wall. Calee placed her foot in front of the hole to prevent the anole from escaping and bent down and snatched the lizard up in her right hand. She looked at the lizard closely and realized it was wearing a tiny miner's hat with a small light attached to the front of it. "I know who you are," Calee said accusingly. The lizard nodded his head quickly which caused the tiny hat to cover his eyes. Little Anolycus, the anole, used his lizard reasoning: If he couldn't see the Chancellor, then surely, she couldn't see him. Calee carefully used her left index finger and pushed his miner's hat back up onto the top of his head and stated, "Nice try lizard, but you're not invisible. If memory serves me correctly," Calee stated, "my sister, Keleos, presented you to a certain Amazon a few years ago as a birthday gift." Anolycus did his best to look innocent and even tried to shrug his shoulders as if to say, "I have NO idea what you're talking about." "If you're here, lurking about my office, it can only mean that your companions can't be too far away," Calee reasoned with the lizard. She no sooner completed her statement when she heard a muffled doggy voice, "Raar rar rou?" coming from behind her wall. She glanced down to see a white furry paw extending through the hole in her wall. She watched as the paw began patting the floor this way and that as if it were trying to locate something. Calee bent down and carefully grabbed the small paw causing its owner on the other side of the wall to let out a "Rut Roh!" "Hey," Calee cried out. "Don't pull that Scooby-Doo crap on me. I'm the one who used it even before you were born, Angus!" She heard a faint, "Yikes," from the Westie behind the wall. Calee released the pooches' paw and knelt down on the floor. Once the paw had cleared the hole in the wall, Calee placed her eye to the hole trying to determine what was going on. She saw panicked flashes of light flickering back and forth but couldn't make out exactly what was behind the wall. She called into the hole, "ForgetMeNot, I know you're in my wall!" Calee paused for a moment as her mind quickly ran through all the accusations she'd ever made towards the Devious Debs on campus. She was fairly certain this was the first time she'd ever had to utter the phrase, "I know you're in my wall". She rolled her eyes and was amazed that she was forced to say it now. "If you ever want to see your lizard again, get to my office now." Calee threaten, "Oh, and bring Angus with you too. You have some explaining to do." Calee walked to the desk and placed Anolycus down on a pile of paperwork. He quickly began climbing up and down the piles of paper searching for something valuable on the Chancellor's desk. A lovely golden quill pen caught his attention and he quickly pulled the pen out of the holder and began dragging it across the desk. Calee snatched her pen away from the alarmed lizard, "Not so fast, you little thief," she accused him and once again the lizard shrugged his shoulders at the Chancellor. There was a soft knock on Calee's door and she called out, "Come in," as she replaced her golden quill back into its proper place. She looked up as Angus and ForgetMeNot entered her office. She noticed that both were also wearing miner's hats with the lights attached to the front. FMN was clad in blue work overalls and she was covered from head to toe in dust and debris. "What in the world are you three doing?" Calee asked in disbelief. "Well," FMN stammered as she began to dust herself off, "We've just been," she paused for a moment as her mind raced trying to come up with an excuse that would sound believable. "We're inspecting the wiring in the walls to make sure every thing is up to code," she offered. FMN looked at Calee and waited to see if the Chancellor would accept the lame excuse. "Nice try, FMN," Calee scoffed at her, "try again, and this time I want the truth." Calee placed her hands on her hips which signified to FMN she meant business. ForgetMeNot quickly decided it was best to come clean and tell the Chancellor the truth. "Remember when Mania was struck by the lightning bolt and everyone had to bring offerings for a ransom to save her?" "Of course I remember" Calee exclaimed. "I brought the wonderful offering of a bag of toys." "Broken toys," FMN muttered under her breath. "Hey," Calee protested, "It was better than a box of tissue," she added in her defense. "So, what does that have to do with you digging holes in my wall?" "When we ended up hanging upside down in the net in Hephaestus' attic, at first I was a little leery of all the metal implements of mass destruction that he created, but after everything returned to normal, I went back to Heph's' forge to check out everything he's been creating. Wow," FMN stated in awe, "the god's a genius!" "You've been hanging out at the Forge?" Calee questioned. "Yep. Heph's been kind enough to actually allow me to assist him while he makes some of his contraptions," FMN explained. "Of course, it took a little while before he trusted me enough to let me help out. He's very insecure, don'tcha know? But, my box of tissues came in handy because when he'd start crying and blubbering about how Aphrodite didn't love him and how could anyone stand to be around a misshapen god, all I had to do was lend him a sympathetic shoulder to cry on and pass him a tissue every once in a while. Pretty soon he let me become his assistant. I think he even looks forward to having the company now." "Does Dite know you're spending time with her hunk?" Calee curiously asked. "Noooooo!" FMN exclaimed. "Heph thought it was best not to tell her pampered pinkness about our friendship." "Oh," Calee nodded her head in understanding. "Well, I imagine that kind of information would prove to cause you a great deal of trouble, not to mention bodily harm." Calee filed away the new information in her mind for later use. "So, exactly what does all of this have to do with you causing property damage to my wall?" Calee continued on with the sole purpose of the meeting. FMN began her explanation, "Heph's been sharing a lot of information with me lately. When Nan was Chancellor at DebU, she asked him to use his godly knowledge to construct an iron clad vault here. She knew if Hephaestus built it, that all her goodies would be safe and sound. She'd never have to worry about the contents being stolen." "I know," Calee added impatiently. "I also know that when Nan retired, her vault was relocated to the Retired Chancellors' Mansion." "Not exactly," FMN mumbled. "What?" Calee questioned quickly. It dawned on the Chancellor that she was about to obtain important information from the Amazon. FMN reached inside her blue work overalls and produced a blueprint bearing Heph's Forge insignia. She walked to the desk and rolled the blueprint out on top of the piles of paper. One end began to spring back but Anolycus quickly hopped on the blueprint to keep it from rolling up again. "See," FMN pointed to the blueprint. "Because of the sheer weight and size of the original vault, Nan decided to have Heph construct a new vault in the Mansion. The logistics of moving the vault were nearly impossible, so Nan had only the contents of the vault relocated to the new vault in the Retired Chancellor Mansion. Then, she had some poor hapless red-shirts seal up the original vault room located within this building. "Very smart," Calee nodded her head. "Nan knew if the red-shirts did the work that it was only a matter of time before they all met an early demise and that there wouldn't be any witnesses left behind to disclose the location of the sealed up vault room." The new found information made Calee smile. So you've used Heph's blueprints to go digging around so you could uncover Nan's original vault room? That's very industrious of you, FMN." Calee nodded with approval. "But how on earth do you have the time to do all this work? I mean," she stated, "you're CA to Bluetopaz and I know," Calee gestured to the paperwork piled on her desk, "that you shouldn't have time for extracurricular activities. The amount of paperwork alone should keep you chained to the assistant's desk." "No way," exclaimed FMN. Bt has a total of 4 assistants: CJ, 'shana, Stripe, and me. We all take turns sitting outside her office manning the assistant's desk and that way the other three are free to…" FMN stopped in mid-sentence so she could reword what she almost let slip out. "…so the other three are free to complete the strenuous, official duties on behalf of Chancellor Bt outside the office." Calee rolled her eyes at ForgetMeNot. "Right," Calee sighed, "and your strenuous duties included digging holes in the wall for Bt?" "Noooo," FMN stated. "Bluetopaz doesn't know what I've been up too. At least, I don't think she does. Bt hasn't said anything at all about staking a claim to the vault room that I've uncovered." "The old vault room which is located behind my wall?" Calee inquired. "Well, I didn't know it was located behind your wall. It wasn't until you did all the renovations in your office and knocked down walls to make the expansion that I realized you were on the other side of my vault room wall." FMN offered up her defense and added, "Finders keepers and possession is 9/10ths of the law." ForgetMeNot continued, "The opening I created is in the wall right outside Bt's office in the recessed alcove behind the pillar with Heph's image carved into it. Heph actually loaned me some of his tools so I could carve out an entrance behind the pillar. And bless his little heart, he actually forged a sliding plate that he installed under the pillar so I could easily push the secret entrance open and closed when I needed to. What a great god he turned out to be. Who knew?" FMN said in amazement. "Who knew, indeed?" Calee repeated in astonishment. A broad smile came across Calee's lips. "I'll need you to come back to my office this evening at 6 o'clock. Calee scooped up the lizard from the blueprint and placed him gently onto Angus' back where she knew he always traveled. Then she took FMN by the elbow and escorted her to the door. Calee opened the door and gave the Amazon a firm nudge out the door. Angus and Anolycus followed the Amazon out and stood next their human. FMN turned and glanced at the Chancellor with a look of confusion in her eyes. "Hey," FMN protested, "Can I have my blueprint back?" Calee quickly closed the door and called out, "You can pick it up at 6 o'clock." The Chancellor knew she had to act fast if she wanted to accomplish what she wanted to accomplish by 6 o'clock.
FMN knocked quietly on Chancellor Calee's office door. She, Angus, and Anolycus, who was perched on the Westie's back, were all freshly cleaned and scrubbed for their meeting. "Come in," Calee called out in a cheery voice inside the office. FMN shot her companions a cautious glance and stated, "Something's wrong, Calee sounds too cheery for her own good, so keep your heads down and stick close to me," the amazon instructed. She opened the door and the three walked hesitantly into the office. FMN was surprised as Bluetopaz arose from a chair next to Calee's desk and took a few steps towards the amazon and gave her a warm greeting. Bt hugged the amazon and stated, "It's been such a pleasure to have you as my assistant but I fully understand the situation. You will certainly be missed." FMN let out a "Gulp" as Bt turned back to her fellow Chancellor and bid her goodbye. "I'm certain the two of you have many important things to discuss so I'll be going," Bluetopaz said as she headed for the door. Before she left she patted Angus on the head and told both dog and lizard, that she hoped to see them again someday soon. As the door closed behind Bt, the confused amazon turned and looked at Calee. "Huh?" FMN muttered. Calee held up an official DebU parchment and explained what had just happened. "Bt knows that I'm swamped with work so I asked her if I could enlist one of her assistants as my own." "What!" FMN exclaimed. "Bt gave me away?" Calee giggled, "More to the point, FMN, she gave you to ME," and she pointed to the signatures on the parchment. Calee walked behind her desk and sat down in her chair as she motioned for FMN to take the seat next to her desk. "Naturally, I'll expect you to continue to conduct the same business that you were doing while you were Bt's assistant," Calee said with a sweet smile. "Along with all my paper work," she added as she glanced over the top of the paper mountains on her desk. "And, I also took the liberty to visit Hephaestus this afternoon. I swear, I think he's more than a little smitten with you," Calee chuckled. "When I explained that I'd made arrangements with Bluetopaz to transfer you to my office he was upset about losing his pretty little assistant. He even lamented over who would practice standard fire safety procedures with him at the Forge." Calee waved her hand in the air as if trying to recall the conversation. "Oh, yes," she continued, "he wanted to know who he would "Stop, Drop, and Roll" with if you didn't have time to work at the Forge anymore." Calee let out a sinister giggle, "I'm certain Aphrodite would just love to hear that you've been intentionally catching your garments on fire so you could enjoy a little fire safety practice with Heph in the afternoons. Again, FMN let out an audible, "Gulp". "But, I assured him as long as you did your duties for me that I would allow you to continue assisting him at the Forge. Of course, I did ask him to assist you in working on my behalf so you'd have more free time to spend with him," Calee added. "He's assisting me in doing your work?" FMN stated with disbelief. "You convinced Heph to do your paperwork?" "No, silly amazon," Calee countered, "not to do paperwork, but help you install one of those hidden doors with the sliding plates in my office so I have access to my new work space." Calee smiled again as she tapped her cheek with her index finger as if she were trying to recall the correct words. "I think you used to refer to my new work space as your hidden vault room." With that said Calee bent down and picked up a large leather sack containing tools she'd borrowed from Heph. She walked around the desk and deposited them on the astonished amazons lap. "He'll be by bright and early in the morning to help you with my special project," Calee informed her. "I can't believe this!" FMN stated in disbelief. "You can't just claim it for yourself, not after I've done all the work." "Oh yes I can," retorted Calee, "unless you want Aphrodite to find out about how you've been spending your time." "That's blackmail!" exclaimed FMN. Calee nodded her head and smiled, "Of course it is, how you think I became a Chancellor in the first place?" "Well, it's getting late and you'd better get a good nights' rest so you can report for work first thing in the morning," Calee chirped. "and remember FMN," Calee said as she held up the parchment, "Possession is 9/10ths of the law, and I own you now!" FMN, Angus, and Anolycus all headed out the door and left the laughing Chancellor behind them. |
