The five pictures above are how the Candlestick looked
straight from the shop. It was a very respectable paint job (one of the
things that attracted me to the piece) however I wanted to give the
object a personal touch and as I was planning to give it away for a
Christmas present I thought that I would repaint it to match the room
that it would (hopefully) be displayed in. The full item is
approximately 9 inches tall and is made of resin with a silver foil
candle holder at the top.
After a bit of clean up I undercoated the entire model in Humbrol
Matt Grey (neither stage shown here) and then sat down to determine the
colour scheme that I would use.
Looking at the original colour scheme I liked the two-tone wing
membranes and decided that I would use a similarly blended pattern. The
room is decorated blue and silver and so I decided to keep the colour
scheme a rather simple mix of blues for the dragon and silver for the
candlestick. The dragon body was base coated using Humbrol Gloss Dark
Blue, it's underside and spines were Citadel Enchanted Blue, it's mouth
was painted Citadel Worm Purple and the candlestick CItadel Chaos
Black.
In order to block in the areas of the wings that I wanted blending I
decided to split the wings into three parts and used Humbrol Gloss Dark
Blue, Citadel Enchanted Blue and Citadel Electric Blue. These divisions
wouldn't be visible in the finished product but would help with
the highlights stage.
I applied a wash of a thinned down mixture of Humbrol
Gloss Dark Blue and Citadel Black (approximately 1 part blue and black
to 9 parts water) to the entire dragon, including inside of its mouth, and then dry-brushed on some
highlights with Citadel Enchanted Blue.
The horns were painted black and Citadel Orc Brown was added to the
talons and teeth.
The ridges running down its back and lower half of the wings were
highlighted with Citadel Electric Blue to emphasize the
highlights.
Further Electric Blue highlights were applied to the underside of the
dragon and the mouth was highlighted with Worm Purple. The teeth and
claws were picked out with an equal mix of Citadel Orc Brown and Citadel
Bleached Bone. The candlestick was then drybrushed with Humbrol
Gunmetal. At this stage I removed the foil candle holder that was stuck
into the top of the candlestick as it wasn't seated
correctly.
After searching around for a replacement candle holder I came across a
Christmas decoration in a pound shop that had exactly what I needed. I
bought it, removed the candle holder and fitted it into the candlestick.
Rather than just being a foil like metal the new one was steel but
unfortunately was slightly too tall. I considered grinding out some of
the resin from the candlestick but in the end decided that the easiest
thing to do would be to build up the candlestick to the required height.
At this stage I also painted the candlestick with Humbrol Aluminium
and added a green eye as a slight contrast to the multi blue hued
dragon. The horns were also painted Humbrol Aluminium to tie the dragon
and candlestick together.
I finished building up the height of the candlestick and glued the new
candle holder in place using Araldite 2 part epoxy glue.
To give an extra sparkle to the dragon I obtained some Dulux KidZone
Glitter Paint (this is basically PVA Glue with glitter added). It goes
onto the surface white but dries clear leaving the glitter showing and,
as a side-effect, it makes the painted areas very glossy and leathery
looking. I varnished the entire model in Humbrol Satin Cote and then
applied several coats of this paint to the wings to get an even coat of
glitter.
The Finished Dragon
So, once again, here it is Holly. I hope you like it.
