The Bund 外滩
![]() THE BUND AREA For a very long time the Bund has been regarded as a symbol of the city of Shanghai. The world famous Bund is characterized not only by its beautiful scenery but also by the clusters of buildings of various styles on it. Along one side of the broad avenue ZhongShan Road 中山路 stand over 20 high magnificent buildings, which have won for Shanghai the good name "a gallery of world architecture" or "an architectural museum of the world". Although those buildings were not all designed by the same persons, nor built by architects of the same nation, even not at the same time, they are in full harmony with each other both in architectural style and in artistic taste. Even their outlines are so natural and smooth that people from any angle may be greatly impressed with their dignified, imposing and graceful air. A wide embankment lies on one side parallel to the world-famous Huangpu River 黄浦江, known as the mother river of Shanghai, which rises in the Tai Lake 太湖, Jiangsu Province 江苏省, Hows through the urban area of the city and empties into the mouth of the Yangtze River 长江, with a total length of 112 kilometers. ![]() The Bund at night The Bund is all the more romantic when it is enveloped in gathering darkness. At night, colorful lights from all the buildings on both sides of the Huangpu River illuminate the Bund, turning it into a scene of wonderland. Anyone who has enjoyed the beautiful scene will say: "What an unforgettable sight it is!" ![]() Located along the Huangpu River between Huangpu Park and Xinkaihe, Bund Sight-enjoying Deck, popularly named "Lovers' Wall", is 1,700 meters long. Its ground is paved with 140,000 colourful floor bricks and granite. The deck is decorated with 64 beautifully designed lamps and 32 bowl-shaped flower terraces. In the 1980s, owing to the severe housing problem and for lack of recreational places, lovers came there to coo, which made up a very rare romantic scene attracting a great number of tourists. Up to now it is still a place where many lovers like to go. ![]() Huangpu River Cruise has been regarded as one of the most important and traditional tourist activities at night. It is known to all that the beautiful Huangpu River 黄浦江, also called the mother of this metropolis, embodies all the quintessences of Shanghai's attractive scenes. ![]() Huangpu River Cruise During the cruise, visitors can enjoy the magnificent scenes on both banks. On the west bank dozens of imposingly tall and distinct buildings of different foreign architectural styles make up a never to be forgotten night scene, forming a sharp contrast with those modern high rises on the east bank. One of the most enchanting scenes during the cruise is the combination of the world-famed bridges and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Nanpu Bridge 南浦大桥 and Yangpu Bridge 杨浦大桥 are exactly like two huge dragons while the Oriental Pearl TV Tower 东方明珠电视塔 looks like a pure pearl. This scene just corresponds to a very popular Chinese legend: "Two dragons play with a pearl." One of the cruises is "Pujiang Sightseeing",which offers four different routes: Refined Sightseeing (about 1 hour), Sightseeing between two bridges (about 2 hours). Night Sightseeing (about 2 hours), Sightseeing between the Bund and Wusongkou (about 3.5 hours).
