Ever since Justin Timberlake penned and released the song, "Bringing Sexy Back" everyone has been using that catch phrase, "I am bringing sexy back!!" But really, what is sexy and is it really back?
Sexy and SEX are not the same, although, you can't tell it by media standards. Sexy used to mean classy with a robust dose of sensuality. A bare collarbone and slight cleavage peeking from an elegant evening gown is sexy. A fishnet dress with a dental floss g-string is SEX appeal, not sexy. A sultry smile and wink is sexy. Mouthing an object in a mock oral sex is sexually suggestive, not sexy.
We have lost the standard. There was a time when standards were respected, honored and maintained. In the current society, anything goes. There is no longer a standard of what anything is, because people are moved by their emotions, not their intellect. Just because something makes you feel like you want to have sex does not make it sexy.
Something, or even someone, that is truly sexy can evoke a precence of sex where there is none implied. So, I feel that while there have been many pretenders, sexy is still out to lunch.
