So, I have become somewhat active in the whole local political scene lately, although I have always voted and been semi-educated on what was going on in the political fields. It seems as though the local republicans are doing more than mud slinging when it comes to Harold Ford Jr., a young man running for the senate that happens to be black. One commercial says not to vote for him because he is too liberal, although it gives no examples of his liberal views. Another says to not vote for him because he went to school in "DC". He has been a congressman for the city of Memphis for more than 5 years , yet he is not good enough to be a senator, because he is not "Tennesseean" enough. Another talks about his admitting that he is an eligible bachlor in Essence Magazine. They say that he hasn't been to his home church in a few months, and loads of other manure.
But you know what? It is typical of this area of the south. I live in the city of Brownsville, TN and when the senior class votes for superlitives, they still vote for a set of white Mr. and Mrs. and a Black set, and not one parent or law maker has questioned it. They still have an all white skating rink in this town, although it is rarely used and it is common places to be considered "Colored" depending on to whom you are talking. My mother went to the high school to talk to the principal about how my brother was being treated in his classes, not long after we moved down here. He told her that he was well aware of how people did things "in the North", seeing as he had lived in Florida for several years and that he did not like the uppity cockyness that was being displayed, (my brother questioned a teacher on the information which was provided in a 9th grade class that he had learned in the 4th grade in New York). It is a shame and I am just sick of it. But, it doesn't matter to them. Being from New York, I don't have much of a voice here anyway.
I hope that this election changes the face of government, if for no one else, at least for the good folks down here in Tennessee.
