Bring It On Home/Long Distance Call/Baby Please Don't Go/When the Levee Breaks (inc. For What It's Worth)A minor Led Zeppelin reunion when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This was the night of JPJ's famous jab -- "I'd like to thank my friends [Page and Plant] for finally remembering my phone number." Other musicians include Jason Bonham, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Neil Young, Page, and Plant.

Zooma/Goose/Grind/The Smile of Your Shadow/Nosumi Blues/No Quarter/Spaghetti Junction/Steel Away/Snake Eyes/Bass 'N' Drums/Crackback/B. Fingers/Jump Blues/When the Levee Breaks/Tidal/Trampled Under Foot/Black DogThe first show in 5 years. It's a power trio with Nick Beggs (Stick guitar) and Terl Bryant (drums). Jones plays a 10-string, 12-string, 8-string, and 4-string basses, along with his bass steel, mandola and keyboards. He often plays multiple instruments within one song. "No Quarter" was introduced as being "something from when dinosaurs were roaming the Earth".

Oct. 3, 1999 Roisin Dubh, Galway, Ireland
The official setlist that the band used said "Oct.2/3 Roisin Dubh" on the top - so tonight was probably the same as the previous show. Jones' 12-string bass has frets that light up!

Also on the setlist, before "Bass N Drums" the title "Triple Neck" was written, and then crossed out. JPJ wasn't quite ready to premiere his show's centrepiece tonight!

I'm still not sure who the drummer is -- reviews and reports always say someone different.
See the Festival's website for more info. This is their bio of JPJ, who will be playing on the third of the four nights.
"Especially British rock bass players, amongst who John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) has given rock an extra dimension. The bass guitar got a more important and insistent function, which made it possible for pop to move onto rock. Partly thanks to his work with Led Zeppelin's they became one of the most important rock bands ever. In the 90s he collaborated with R.E.M and Diamanda Galás. Recently his first solo album 'Zooma', was released, an album full of heavy oncoming waves of stomping guitars."

Fingers/Jump Blues/When the Levee Breaks/Tidal/Trampled Under Foot/Black DogOct. 13, 1999 Toad's Place, New Haven, CTNo real change to the setlist. JPJ commented on it being his first real tour date and he was nervous. About some of the songs -- "Steel Away" is a slow blues that includes his lap steel and people are saying it is reminiscent of "Since I've Been Loving You". "Jump Blues" is a faster blues in the key of A and one fan compared it to "Rock and Roll". One fan asked JPJ if "Jump Blues" was a reworking of the boogie section in live Zeppelin versions of "Whole Lotta Love" and he replied, "No comment." Read a review of this show.

He played the same 4 Zep songs, that's all I know for sure. I haven't been getting any setlists, just hearing glowing reviews. "Nosumi Blues", short on the album, can last up to about 10 minutes... I can't wait to hear that one live. By all reports, JPJ is having a great time!

Fingers/Jump Blues/When the Levee Breaks/Tidal/Trampled Under Foot/Black DogHere's more info on the "Triple Neck" song JPJ has been playing on his triple-neck. [Thanks Scott!] JPJ starts by playing the bottom neck (6-string guitar). A computer samples that and then plays it all back while JPJ moves up a neck and plays the 12-string guitar. The computer also samples that, plays back both 12- and 6-string sections, while JPJ jams on the top neck (a mandolin). This goes on for several times until there's a whole mess of guitars playing and eventually the computer system screws up and it breaks down. Cool! Eat your heart out, Jimmy Page!

Fingers/Jump Blues/When the Levee Breaks/Tidal/Trampled Under Foot/Black DogI was at this show, leaning on the stage. Fantastic! JPJ is a wizard on the lap steel, bass, keyboards. He was having a blast. Nick Beggs rules. There was no triple neck performance tonight, since the computer loops were not working, but since I snuck in the back door to the soundcheck, I got to hear it! "Zooma" was definately meant to be heard in a live setting, that's for certain.

Also new is a bass lap steel version of "Nobody's Fault But Mine", which I'm sure is fascinating! "Steel Way" had a new mandolin intro tonight. Zooma/Grind/The Smile of Your Shadow/That's The Way (tease)/Going To California/Steel Away/When the Levee Breaks/B. Fingers/Nobody's Fault But Mine/Black DogThis was part of a giant music festival where many artists fill up every club in Austin over many nights. JPJ only was allowed an hour, and he played for about 50 minutes the shortened set above. (What, no "No Quarter"?) "Steel Away" still includes the mandolin intro/bridge. Interestingly, JPJ did not play any keyboards at this show at all. It looks like he played bass for 3 songs (Zooma, Grind, B. Fingers), bass mandolin/mandolin for 2.5 songs (Smile, TTW, California, the intro to Steel Away), and bass lap steel for 3.5 songs (end of Steel, Levee, NFBM, Black Doggy).

Fingers/Jump Blues/When the Levee Breaks/Tidal/Trampled Under Foot/Black DogSetlists reports are always different, and I think it's because people hear Led Zeppelin riffs that may or may not be there. "Steel Away" is NOT "You Shook Me", "In My Time Of Dying", or "Let That Boy Boogie". When you see that on a report somewhere, it's safe to assume that it's probably "Steel Away" - with maybe enough similar notes/licks tossed in from one of those songs to cause confusion. The teases at the end of "Bass 'n' Drums" are completely different, I think. There's been recent claims of "How Many More Times" and "Sick Again", but again that may be a listener over-listening! (Of course, it could also very easily be JPJ feeling saucy.)
